Moses Levy of Florida

Presidential Award of Distinction to C.S. Monaco

Chris Monaco 01

The Florida historical Society awarded the 2006 Presidential Award of Distinction to Chris S. Monaco in absentia for his book, Moses levy of Florida: Jewish Utopian and Antebellum Reformer on May 26th at its annual meeting held in Naples, Florida. The society’s Presidential Award of Distinction is presented occasionally to individuals whose scholarship in the field of Florida history is ground breaking in scope or which represents a revived interest in a distinct area of study. Monaco’s book on Moses Levy is regarded as a major contribution to ethnographic studies in Florida history and to the field of American Jewish history in general. In making his decision, Florida Historical Society’s President Dr. Robert A. Taylor commented: “Monaco’s persistence in solving the mysterious and muddled life of Moses Levy is admirable. This is a book that is deserving of recognition and which should be included in the thorough and complete study of Florida’s history and in the ever-evolving thread of American history.”
