He was a Revolutionary Soldier.
Capt. John DeVane II. son of Maj. John DeVane of New Hanover Co. N.C. was in that county, Dec. 12, 1755 and grew up and lived there most of his spending his last years on his plantation which laid partly in Bladen and Hanover Counties. His wife was Mrs. Ann Julia Evans, a sister of Capt. Davis. John DeVane II and his brother James DeVane entered the struggle as minute-men in the fall of 1775, and served six months in a commanded by their father. The service lasted until 1776.
