He was a Revolutionary Soldier.
Mr. DeVane served as J.P. in New Hanover Co. N.C. for several years being commissioned Nov. 29, 1768. In the Revolution, he was Major of the New Hanover Co. Militia in 1775-76 and also rendered support freely in ways of supplies. He and his family were members of St. James Episcopal Church Wilmington and he was a vestryman in that church for a number of years. He was buried under the church as was his wife.
