1921 to 1940 was yet another amazing time for technology. Technicolor™ movies were released; Robert H. Goddard continued his experiments, with the realization that liquid fuel rockets are more efficient than solid fuel rockets; the idea on the television had long been dreamed of, but was achieved only after many years of work. "Steam Boat Willie", the first mass produced animated cartoon was filmed by Walt Disney, and the first miracle drug, penicillin was discovered and refined. This period of time was nothing short of amazing.

Color!!!

Movies in the 1920's were in black and white. Most of people enjoyed them, because many of the greatest movies ever made are from that period. But, a lot of people agreed that they would like their movies to be in color. It was possible, but the process was painstaking and was not worth all the effort put into it. The first Technicolor™ motion pictures were made using only red and green, which often gave it more natural (brown-like) colors. This was used until the 30's when three color Technicolor™ was utilized by Walt Disney. Still though, many films were black and white until Hollywood wanted to separated itself from tv by making the films color instead of simple black and white.

Goddard's New Fuel

John H. Goddard was ahead of the rest of the world with rocketry. Goddard had now worked on the liquid-fuel rocket. Before that time only solid-fuel rockets had been used. Liquid fuel rockets were much lighter than the solid-fuel counterparts for their size and could therefore go much higher and farther.

Liquid rockets work by taking a fuel (like hydrogen) and an oxidizer (like oxygen), then the fuel and oxidizer are mixed while they are still liquid (both at extremely cold temperatures) and the resulting force sends whatever the rocket flying.

Television

It was not a single invention that makes up the television, but hundreds that compose this machine. Vladimir Zworykin worked with the Westing House Electric Company to make most of this machine. The following are some of the parts of the TV set.

  • Cathrode-Ray-Tube - This is the screen of the television.
  • Speaker(s) - The speakers make the noise that is sent to the TV.
  • Light Transmitter - These machines shoot rays of light onto the screen to make what you see on the screen.
  • Receiver - The antenna or cable box that the tv is hooked up to to receive the images and sound to display.

1928

Steam Boat Willie

Steam Boat Willie was the first animated cartoon. The animation of this cartoon was done by making many small changes in the positions of any thing that was supposed to move with the animation, and then rapidly playing the pictures so that it appears that the picture it moving. Then the animator takes the pistures to a machine so that they can be put onto film. Walt Disney was the first person to accomplish this feat of motion pictures.

1928-1938

Penicillin

Penicillin is a true miracle drug. Before it was discovered, people commonly died of pneumonia and diseases penicillin can cure. Penicillin is a mold, Penicillum Notatum. It works by killing bacteria by stopping its growth.

The first samples of penicillin, were very weak, and almost did as much harm to the recipient as it did to the bacteria. Ten years later the penicillin became better. It was more concentrated and not as harmful. It could now be used to treat several sicknesses. In 1980, medical science advanced again, and now people allergic to the antibiotic could now take penicillin.
