Unit Management Plan

The single most important document with respect to preserve management and operation is the Unit Management Plan (file size = 8.5 Mb, requires Adobe Acrobat). The unit management plan is approved by the Governor and Cabinet sitting as the Land Management Advisory Committee. Like most government documents the management plan is very dry reading. The unit plan does however describe the natural and cultural resources to be found at Paynes Prarie, as well as the types and descriptions of the natural communities.

If you do not have a high-speed internet connection, you can download only the Goals and Objectives section. This is a Microsoft Word document.

Prescribed Fire as a Resource Management Tool

Prescribed fire is the Preserve's most powerful resource management tool. You will find references to presribed burning throughout the Unit Plan. The Florida Division of Foresrty web site has extensive information on prescribed fire and links to additional resource management sites. If your interested only in prescribed fire issues then you may want to go directly to their Prescribed Burning Issues page.
