Of Interest

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park's varied topography (from 50 feet elevation at Alachua Sink to 150 feet along the North Rim) supports a complex mosaic of hydric, mesic, and xeric habitats ranging from basin marsh to hardwood hammock. This diversity is primarily responsible for the large number of bird species recorded in the preserve to date. Bird species are listed by family in this check-list.

Paynes Prairie is the major wintering ground for the eastern population of Sandhill Cranes. Wildlife frequently seen includes wading birds, alligators, snakes, and small mammals. The juxtaposition of this vast natural realm near a major population center is a remarkable coincidence; certainly the preserve is a tremendous public asset to be enjoyed, managed wisely, and preserved for future generations.

Acknowledgments
The completeness and accuracy of this list is due to the assistance of Mr. J.H. Hintermister V, Mr. S.A. Nesbitt,Mrs. B.P. Muschlitz, Mr. Rex Rowan, Mr. C.N. Parenteau, and Mr. Howard Adams.

TAXONOMY:
Follows the A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds, Sixth Edition, 1983, and supplements. Where previously used common names have been substantially changed, the former name follows the new in parentheses.

SEASONS
These categories indicate the general periods in which to expect the various species.

Spring (S) - March, April, May
Summer - June, July, August
Fall (F) - September, October, November
Winter (W) - December, January, February

HABITAT CLASSIFICATION
These are general and sometimes broad habitat categories, listed in accordance with likelihood of birds occurring within them.
M- Basin Marsh: freshwater wetland dominated by grasses, sedges, and rushes. Also includes wet prairie.
H- Hardwood Hammock: upland forest dominated by broadleaf trees.
P- Pine flatwoods: relatively level forest dominated by pines.
O- Old Fields: open areas previously used for cultivation or as improved pastures for cattle grazing.
L - Lake: open water such as lakes and ponds, including their shorelines.

CATEGORIES OF ABUNDANCE
These designations apply to the relative abundance of species seen (or heard) in the "appropriate habitat."
A - Abundant: conspicuously present; much more numerous than most species in a given habitat
C - Common: present in large numbers; likely to be observed
F - Fairly Common: present in moderate numbers; can usually be observed
U- Uncommon: usually present in small numbers; observed infrequently
R- Rare: not to be expected; observed at intervals of 2-5 years
X- Accidental: fewer than 5 records total; may apply to out-of-season records of "regular" species

These categories are only relative, subjective indices of bird abundance. Used in conjunction with habitat categories they should give one a feel for the relative distribution and abundance of birds within the preserve.

BREEDING STATUS
[Breeding status known]
*Species with confirmed breeding records in the check-list area. Probably breeds here on a regular basis.
[Breeding postulated]
+Suspected breeders. Only circumstantial breeding evidence.

Please report any observations of rare, unlisted birds, or those found at times other than designated to the Visitor Center or Ranger Station.
