It's National Poetry Month !
April 2004

This month in Gainesville features a whole smorgasbord of local 'word art' alternatives to the usual nightlife fare of bars and bands. Here's a sample of some of the fun and funky spoken word and poetry events happening around town :

UF/SFCC Campus NOW Women's Rant Night, open reading for spoken word, poetry and acoustic music of all styles by women performers. Thursday, April 8th, 8pm, Civic Media Center. $4-7 requested donation benefits CNOW. Reading will flow into CMC's weekly Poetry Jam later in the evening (everyone welcome to read at that point).

Ghost Dog Press Presents: 'Dimestore Jargon,' Readings by local poets Kyle Strohman and Jimmy Nil Fishhawk. Friday, April 9th, 8pm, Civic Media Center, 1021 W. University Ave., $3-5 sliding scale donation requested (benefits CMC).

A Tongue-Lashing: 4 Poets Showing Off Because Kathy Freeperson Appeared To Us In The Pickle Isle At Publix And Told Us To. At Wild Iris Books! Saturday, April 17th at 6:30pm (Open to everyone) Featured Poets: In The Order Of Who Has Been Seen Naked In Public The Most- Arupa, Feral, Liz McCulloch, and Mary J. Evrard

National Poetry Month at the Public Library
On Wednesday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Headquarters Library, in honor of National Poetry Month, the Alachua County Library District will hold a Poetry Jam, hosted by Sheila Bishop and loosely modeled on the CMC's famed Poetry Jam. Come read one or two of your favorite poems and meet other poetry aficionados. This will be an all ages crowd. Y'all come on down !

And if all that isn't enough : You can come to Spoken Word: Performing Poetry a free workshop led by Gainesville performance art diva Sheila Bishop. Get tongue-tied just thinking about reading poetry aloud, especially if it is your own poetry? Learn how to take a poem from the page to the stage. Some poems will be provided, but feel free to bring one or two you want to work with. You've got five chances to catch this workshop:

Ghost Dog Press is a small, non-profit press based in Ann Arbor, MI and dedicated to promoting original, cutting-edge poetry and prose at the grassroots level all across North America. Local Ghost Dog poet Jimmy Nil Fishhawk will host a night of underground poetry and prose readings, including pieces from the latest Ghost Dog Press publication, 'Dimestore Jargon' by Jake Kaida. The reading will also feature original material by Gainesville poet Kyle Strohman, Fishhawk, and others.

Copies of 'Dimestore Jargon' and Fishhawk's recently published book 'Gone' will be available for purchase, and information on other poetry events will be presented as well.
