This page is dedicated to my best friends and the trials and tribulations of being owned by four very unique cats. It is also a memorial to the thousands of cats and dogs who die each year because of pet overpopulation. We all have our soapboxes, and any harm to animals is mine. To me, harm includes leaving your cat or dog outside 24 hours a day and feeding him crappy commercial food and petting him when your paths cross. Cats are not loners, they do not prefer to be left alone outside, nor do they thrive in such conditions. Dogs don't either. To those in the 'choir' I apologize for the sermon.
Additionally, I would like to add that if you don't get your pet from a responsible, reputable breeder, please do not buy it from a pet store or from someone who simply breeds for money-- go to your local humane society or animal shelter and SAVE A LIFE!! While I understand and respect the choice of buying a purebred animal, I am also aware that many of these animals are a result of careless and money hungry breeding. There ARE good breeders out there, if you know where to look. One such place to start is the Critter Haven Responsible Breeders' Award Page. Here you will find breeders who have received an award for taking a responsible approach to the breeding of companion animals. Or how about the Cat Fanciers' Breeder Referral List. If you don't see the breed you're interested in there, write to me and I will help you find a breeder who is working with the animal you're looking for. Also, please consider breed rescue (here is a second breed rescue site) or adopting a pet from your local animal shelter or humane society. All four of my cats are adoptees, and you couldn't ask for better cats. Remember, a pedigree and papers in and of themselves do not make a great cat or dog: YOU DO!

This is Skippy, born in August 1992. I adopted him from a vet's office. Skippy is a dog in cat's clothing, no offense :) He loves people, other cats and can even tolerate dogs that know their place (which is, incidentally, in someone else's home as far as Skippy is concerned!) Skippy has three great loves: food, snuggle time and food. Unfortunately for him, he is allergic to every grain imaginable, as well as to yeast. This means that in order to keep him from vomiting, I have to make his food. Skippy currently dines on raw chicken and veggies, and has gone from, err, 'festively plump' -as Cartman would say- to toned and trim as a result of his new food. Not to mention no more puking all over the place! Want to see more of Skippy? Click here |
This is Sam, who was born about a month before Skippy in July 1992. He was my first kitty, and he has never forgotten the one day he spent as top cat before I got Skippy. He and Skip were my best friends when life got rough, and moved with me when I went to college. I lived alone, and spent many days in a strange city with just their companionship. None of us has ever forgotten that, and I cherish the bond I have with Sam (and Skippy). Sam loves people - he never stops purring, and chats up a storm. Unfortunately, he's no fan of other cats, never mind dogs!! It took him well over a year to share space with Max without hissing and growling, longer still with Jezebel. Sam eats a raw meat diet, and looks very much like a jungle kitty with sleek black fur and shiny white teeth! He loves to play and loves it even more if you just hang out with him. He's simply awesome! Want to see more of Sam? Click here |
This is Max. Utterly Unflappable Max, that is. This cat can handle anything: he's not afraid of dogs, loves every cat he meets and tolerates daily pills and the occasional force-feeding that comes with chronic illness. And he's the most loving, good-natured animal you will ever meet! Like Sam, he's always purring - but unlike Sam, the purring doesn't stop when another cat enters the room. Max loves Skippy and Jezebel, and still tries to befriend Sam. Unfortunately, Max isn't a super healthy kitty. He has a heart murmur and an arrhythmia that likely means an enlarged heart (HCM); he has colitis, which means that he has blood and mucous on his stools. This is controlled pretty well by an allergy type diet. And, the latest blow, he is in the beginning of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). We caught it early, and are battling it, and his other problems, with supplements, diet and homeopathy. If any cat deserved a long and happy life, it's Max. And we intend to do our part to ensure it :) Want to see more of Max? Click here |
Last, but certainly not least, is Jezebel. She's just over two years old now. Born to a feral mom, Jez spent the first four months of her life living outside an apartment complex in Gainesville, Florida. They managed to trap and neuter all her littermates, and all had loving homes before she could be caught. When she was, it was because she was very sick. She spent her first two weeks 'in captivity' at the vet's office I worked at, where her only human contact was in the form of needles, pills and thermometers. She was very brave, but eventually she calmed down enough to be handled, and I took her home for the weekend to foster her. Yeah right! She never left. She really only trusts me, but for winning her trust, I am rewarded with the most intimate relationship I've ever had with an animal. She does what she is asked, never needs to be scolded and spends every minute of her day with me... I can bury my face in her soft tummy without fear of being scratched. She doesn't meow- she peeps and purrs... in fact, one of those peeps is telling me to quit typing and scratch her tummy right now! Want to see more of Jezebel? Click here |

The Miracle of Life...
"Come
quick, come quick", their mother said "The time is getting near"
She
feels that when the kittens come the children should be here.
She
told them that a big orange Tom took "Kitty" as his wife
"It's
wonderful, a gift from God, the miracle of life"
At
half a year young "Kitty" feels too painful and too scared
to
appreciate six miracles, blind-eyed and yellow haired.
But
she knows these lives depend on her and nature tells her how
and
as she cleans them, children ask "Mom, can we go now?"
But
now and then for six more weeks the children visit her
to
play with six new magic toys made of life and fur.
The
six weeks pass, the newness gone and new homes yet unfound,
Mom
bundles up six miracles and takes them to the pound,
Where
lovingly, with gentle hands and no tears left to cry,
the
shelter workers kiss them once and take them off to die.
And
"Momma Kitty" now she's called mourns her loss and then,
she's
put outside, and of course, she's pregnant once again.
Dad
tells "Kitty" STOP THIS NOW or you wont live here long!
but
deep inside of Momma Cat, this time something's wrong.
Too
young, too small, too often bred now nature's gone awry,
Momma
Kitty feels it too and she crawls off to die.
She
too is freed from this cruel world, and from her time of strife.
How
harsh the truth, how high the price this "Miracle of Life"?
