The theme is Living In The World As Quakers.
True religion does not draw men out of the world,
but enables them to live better in it,
and excites their endeavors to mend it. - William Penn

- Come enjoy the hospitality of the Buskirks as we
join in feasting,
fellowship and spiritual nourishment. Topic this month is Daniel
A. Seeger's Michener lecture, Finding Our Sacred Ground, Quakerism's
Place in a Globalized Future.
- Jean Larson has valiantly stepped in to take Morrie Trimmer's place
as head of the building committee. Knowing Jean, she will probably
be an expert contractor by the time we have our new building. We
are all holding Morrie in the light, hoping that he will be well enough
to help "cut the ribbon" on our new Meeting House.
The contract has been signed with Anglin Construction, the site plan
and the construction plans and schedules are with the City of
Gainesville. We hope to have approval within two weeks. If the bank
loan is approved by then, we can break ground immediately. Some
members are considering making personal loans in sufficient amounts
to
meet the $180,000 probably needed, if the bank does not meet our
schedule.

From Earthcare witness
The Florida Legislature is setting aside 5 million dollars (doesn't
seem like much compared to what is spent on the war machine) to fund
research and development of a Springs Task Force devoted to protecting
Florida's springs and aquifer. The springs are the most visible
symbol of the health of the aquifer that is our ground water source.
This system is essential to life in Florida. Population growth, urban
sprawl, growing demand for ground water, introduction of fertilizers,
pesticides and other pollutants to the springshed all contribute to
its degradation. Recently, North Florida Journal, a local community
TV program on WUFT, which can be seen on Friday nights, devoted a
program to this topic. During the discussion, a website was given:
http://floridasprings.org / I checked it out and found it extremely
thorough in discussing the problems and explaining what we as
individuals can do to help. I'm sure many of you already do a great
many of the things suggested, but maybe there are things on the site
that you had not thought of or needed to be reminded of.
In the study guide entitled EARTHCARE FOR FRIENDS I found the
following questions for reflection apropos to the topic.
- Do you know others, perhaps even yourselves, who have acted locally
to protect a community water supply?
- If we see water as a commons, what steps do we need take to see
that
principle expressed as public policy?
- How is being active water advocates an expression of our faithfulness
to God?
- Quakers have long been known for working to bring about changes
for
the common good. Has learning about the threats to fresh water
led
you to ask God if there is a task for you in the work of restoring
the earth's water systems to the healthy balance that God created.
Hope to see you at the next meeting of Earthcare Witness.
