Florida's draft boards are suffering a shortage of volunteers. At
present, the time commitment is primarily for the 8 hours initial
training and an annual 3 hours training session. If the draft is
reinstated, the workload could increase markedly. New draftees would
have the right to file a claim for exemption, postponement or
deferment. It is these cases that the volunteers would interview,
investigate and make decisions on. What a blessing Quakers on those
boards could be!

From August 16 -24th, Devender Sellars, of Greensboro, NC, and a
member of our Meeting, is going to represent SEYM at the World
Gathering of Young Friends in Lancaster, England. We are pleased to
be able to give him financial assistance for this worthwhile venture.
Annie Mc Pherson is his mother and Ranjit Sellars, his brother.
-
MEETING FOR EATING: POTLUCKS, Sybil Brennan's latest Friend's
cookbook, is for sale at $10 per copy. Sheree Sims, at (352)
475-5829, is handling the sales during Sybil's absence. Proceeds go
to the new meetinghouse.

On Sunday, June 12, the members of the SEYM executive committee and
the trustees committee combined their yearly executive meeting with a
trip to Gainesville (they actually stayed at the Brennan's in Ocala)
to see our new meetinghouse project. SEYM lent us ten thousand
dollars at low interest, and we appreciate that very much because it
gives us some leeway financially if we should need it. But their
greater gift was the encouragement that they gave us. Many of them
have been parts of construction projects through the years and know
what we are going through. On Sunday, June 12, they attended our
Meeting for Worship. Herb Haigh, clerk of the Board of Trustees,
spoke movingly about his home Meetinghouse in Pa. that had been built
at the cost of years of hard digging and lugging of massive trees and
giant rocks. He spoke of the impact over the years that this
meetinghouse has had in building community and witnessing to Quaker
values.

This month is a time of change at the new
meetinghouse lot. The foundation blocks
have gone in ...
We continue to have good times at the
Quaker Market dinners. In May we
went to Sherrie Southworth's, enjoyed
seeing horses frolicking in the back,
including a mother and baby. The
incredibly delicious, organic/locally
grown food was prepared by Jen Cotter
and was gobbled right down. Thanks to
all who participated and shared a bit of
themselves with the little-known-facts
game.
