BOOK REVIEW
Students may earn up to 100 extra credit points by writing reviews of
books they have read this year. Reviews are intended to "sell" the book to
classmates and the best ones will be displayed on this website. You may want
to look at the one on Best Books now as an example.
They should include:
- Title of book
- Author and possibly some information about the author
- Review of the book, telling enough to entice someone to read it
without telling too much
- Critique of the book, telling why the student recommends this
book
- Could also include some artwork and information about the reviewer
- Anything else that would convince someone to read this book
You may also want to read a movie review or two in the newspaper as an
example and read the section in Write Source 2000 on Book Reviews for
more ideas. Book review sections from the newspaper are also posted on the
board as examples.
READING LOGS
Students are encouraged to read at home as well as at school. Reading
is a skill, just like playing a musical instrument or a sport, and it improves
with practice. Students will receive extra credit if they read at home, keep
a record of what they read, along with the times they read, and have it
verified (signed) by a parent. The more a student reads, the more points
s/he will earn.
NEWSPAPER STORY
Students may earn extra credit points by reading and answering the questions
for the serial story appearing in the "Gainesville Sun." They should answer
the questions on notebook paper, labeling each chapter, and stapling all
pages together before putting in the Extra Credit Box by the due date.
NOVEL CONVERSATIONS
In the Daybreak Section of the Sunday "Gainsville
Sun" you will find a column by Shelley Frazier Mickle in which she discusses
novels, one of which is always designed for students your age. You
can earn extra credit by reading the column each week and responding to
it. If you actually mail or e-mail your response to her, you will
earn even more points. The more weeks you do it, the more points you
earn.
MILLION MINUTES OF READING
Every year "The Gainesville Sun" and others sponsor the Million Minutes
of Reading program in our district schools. Students will receive information
about this in class and I will let them know the due date as soon as I know
it. Students keep track of personal reading which is verified by parents.
Certificates and prizes are awarded, and in my class, extra credit can be
earned. Students can also "kill two birds with one stone" by keeping track
of all the reading at home on their reading logs and get credit for that
also this term. The more reading that is done, the more credit that is earned.
STAMPS
Students may "buy" 25 extra credit points with 100 stamps.
MORE EXTRA CREDIT INFORMATION
Students should refer to their handout on EXTRA CREDIT IN READING for
more information. A copy is also posted by the door in the classroom.
