DICEY'S SONG

by Chan Tran

Is it possible? Could a book possibly be sad, incredibly touching, and beautifully written? Well if you read Dicey's Song you will find the answer.

Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt is about a girl named Dicey who has two brothers and one sister. Their names are James, Sammy, and Maybeth Tillerman. The Tillermans had to go live with their grandma, Gram, because their mother was in the hospital under mental conditions. Now Gram was not the type of grandma who's fragile and sits in a rocking chair for hours knitting you a sweater, or the type who will do anything to spoil you rotten. No way. Gram was more of a strong, no-nonsense person who doesn't show her feelings. Since Gram doesn't show how she feels, Dicey sometimes wondered if Gram loved Dicey and her siblings. Dicey also worried that she and her brothers and sister were costing too much money for Gram.

In this book Dicey, Gram, and the other Tillermans have to learn how to reach out to people and to not hide their feelings. Also they had to learn how to help each other with their problems and needs.

This was an excellent book because it was really sad and heartwarming. This book had great descriptions and wonderful elaboration. When I was reading Dicey's Song, I could really feel what Dicey was going through. This book had a very strong plot. It was a plot a lot of people could relate to. Once I started this book, I was hooked. On a scale of one to ten with ten being the highest, I would rate this book a perfect ten. I would recommend Dicey's Song to anybody who is into coming-of-age books.
