3. Site Stuff

This section handles the things that need to be done to your site, such as banners and site design.

3.1. What makes a good Site?

There will different feelings on this, so we will just make some generalizations. These are some general tips:

  1. Should have a balance between content and design - nobody likes horrible looking sites and nobody likes empty sites. If you aren't creative, you can go for a standard black on white design or get someone else to do the site. If you are short on content, get some!
  2. Try to make appealing and enjoyable pages that will bring people back - this is hard, a site that has done this has done well!
  3. Construction signs are really annoying. Everyone is aware that the sites are constantly under construction. Other annoyances include broken images, error ridden java script, web pages with sound, and too many animated images.
  4. Keep the ring code easily accessible. According to the rules, the banner must be on the first page, or in one of the first frames the ring enters at. This helps to keep the ring unbroken - keep the ring unbroken and more people will visit your site, providing others follow your example.
  5. Please keep "Dead" links to a minimum - if you're moving or removing the page that the ring is entering at, please tell someone, or edit it yourself!
  6. Sounds are annoying, especially background music. The worst thing you could do to your site is put a bad, infinitely prepeating MIDI behind your site. Nothing drives people away faster.
  7. Avoid pop-up windows as much as possible. Some web space providers force them, and they're generally small. However, there are some sites that insist on throwing up a window half the screen size to get you to enter some spam-laden contest. Yet another reason to leave a site.
  8. JavaScript: If you're going to use it, make sure you have it right! I'm a software developer with Visual Studio installed. Every time there's an error in a Java script, my Internet Explorer insists on debugging someone else's code. Most people don't have Visual Studio installed, so they never see this error. Keep this in mind, however: if there's an error in the code, it doesn't work and there's no way to tell, so you might as well not even have the code on your page.

These are just a few. If you can think of any more, send them to Me.

3.2. What are the rules for my site?

Your site must obey the following rules to be part of the AD&D Ring:

  1. Your site must be fantasy related
  2. The banner **MUST** be present on your site
  3. The banner **MUST** be on the FIRST page the ring sees, i.e NO links have to be followed, the first page the user sees has the banner on it

If you do not follow these rules, your site is liable to be:

  • Suspended from the ring. The length of time your site remains suspended varies from one week to one month. If you risk being permanently deleted if your site remains suspended for longer than one week. If you are deleted, you will be removed completely and have to re-apply.
  • Immediately Removed from the ring

See section 3.2.1 for solutions.

3.2.1. What solutions are suggested for these rules?

Rules:

  1. Your site must be fantasy related
  2. The banner **MUST** be present on your site
  3. The banner **MUST** be on the FIRST page the ring sees, i.e NO links have to be followed, the first page the user sees has the banner on it

Solutions:

  1. Leave the ring or change your site
  2. Go to the MyRings page on Yahoo webring to download the navigation bar code. Copy and paste it onto your site.
  3. There are two options:

    Without frames:

    • Set the ring to enter at your webrings page or page with the banner on, use the URL of the page you will put the banner on, not your main page, e.g http://www.server.com/you/webrings.html instead of http://www.server.com/you/
    • Move the banner to the page the ring enters at, in the above example this would be http://www.server.com/you/
    • Put in a 'Doorstep' page e.g adndring.html, which has a 'Click Here to enter my homepage' link with the AD&D Ring banner below it. Then put a link from your page back to this page to let people get back out.
Click here to see a doorstep page example.

    With frames:

    • Create a special frame set - Copy the entrance page, http://www.server.com/you/ and name it something like http://www.server.com/you/index2.html. In the
    • tag, change the reference to the main page, e.g main.html to webrings.html (the page you will put the banner on). Now set the ring to enter at index2.html. Move the banner to main frame's start page in the frame set, in the above example this would be main.html then just set the ring to enter at the normal URL, http://www.server.com/you/ Put in a 'Doorstep' page e.g adndring.html, which has a 'Click Here to enter my homepage' link with the AD&D Ring banner below it. Then put a link from your page back to this page to let people get back out.
Click here to see a doorstep page example. For more information, or if you are still having trouble fulfilling the rules, e-mail me: kevingy@softhome.net.

3.3. I've lost/messed up my banner. Can I get another copy?

Yes - click here. Log into Yahoo webring, if necessary. You should see a list of rings you are a member of. Click on the Get Nav Bar link to get the code.

3.4. How do I edit my site's information?

  1. Go to Yahoo webring (http://webring.yahoo.com).
  2. Log into Yahoo webring using your Yahoo ID and password. (If you joined the webring before webring.org merged with Yahoo, click here.)
  3. There will be a "My Rings" section on the left side of the page. At the top of that section, there will be an Edit button.

These pages were originally designed by James Furness. These pages are maintained by Kevin Yochum.
