As you are aware, I have faced those challenges head on, steadfast, and with the best interest of all children at heart. I am proud to have initiated a proposal for school uniforms in our district to assist in the elimination of fashion competition, provide a safe, structured environment, develop positive peer behavior, build self discipline, self respect, and redirect and/or improve the focus on learning. I also initiated a proposal for peer mediation, and conflict resolution, stressing its importance beginning in elementary and middle schools. As a direct result, Buchholz High School adopted and implemented this program. During my tenure, I have been a strong advocate for chess in our schools and as a direct result, many of our schools are now participating, including chess classes and tournaments at the McPherson Center. Since my appointment by the Florida Education Commissioner to the Board of Directors of the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, I have formed a committee that raised more than $87,000 locally for a State match of approximately 1.8 million dollars to accomplish the goal of providing health insurance for the children of Alachua County, who are dangerously under-insured and are using area Emergency Rooms as their primary source of medical care. It has been a pleasure serving as your Alachua County School Board Member these past four years, and I look forward to another term of meeting the educational needs of our children.
