First Impressions

EDITOR: I first discovered the Independent Student Coalition when three students eagerly approached me with their first issue of the Independent Voice. I found them interesting, well-informed, and helpful. I gave them my number, and within a week two representatives of the Independent Voice invited me to their meeting October 26 at the Orange & Brew- I couldn't say no. Let me make a few comments here.

First, I found the members of the Independent Student Coalition a heterogeneous mixture of normal people with one common goal: proper representation in Student Government.

"It doesn't matter if we disagree on certain issues," one member told me, "so long as the students are informed about their government and their government is representative of the students." The Coalition, I discovered, is not a political party, but a diverse congregation of students who believe in democracy. Second, my sincere thanks to the three or four members who spent hours telling me the history of the Coalition and the importance of an informed public and a representative government in the "real" world- after college. As a result, I snuck into my dorm well past midnight even though the meeting began at 7:30 p.m.

Lastly, if every student on campus saw what I saw of the Independent Student Coalition, I can assure you that Florida Blue Key would no longer control Student Government. It's that simple. Needless to say, I am very impressed. If I can help in any way, I hope no one will hesitate to ask.
