U.S. OPEN - LOOK OUT - HERE WE COME!

Barbara McIntyre, Schools Program Coordinator, for the United State Tennis Association, (USTA) Florida Section, District 4, organized and hosted the "Tennis Carnival For Kids" Friday, December 8, 1995, Noon - 1:30pm at the db Racquet Club, in Gainesville, Florida. (5100 North West 53rd Avenue).

The USTA National "Tennis Carnival" Program is designed for school aged children, who have never played, or are learning to play; as an active, involved, and fun introduction to the lifelong sport of tennis.

The "Tennis Carnival" featured Mark Merklein - touring pro, former UF standout, three-time All-American, and winner of the 1994 NCAA Singles Championship; David Blair - touring pro, former UF standout, and winner (with Mark), of the 1993 NCAA Double Championship; University of Florida Varsity players, Sophomore Bonnie Bleeker, All-Southeastern Conference; Junior Divya Merchant, All-Southeastern Conference, SEC Academic Honor Roll; Senior Damon Henkel, two-time All-American, playing Number One for the Gators.

The students enjoyed "world-class" match play, as well as, participating in various tennis skill contests held in a carnival atmosphere. Winners, and participants were awarded lots'o tennis related prizes.

110 students from Fort Clarke Middle School, and Westwood Middle School, participated. Gracious support for this activity, was provided by the following sponsors: University of Florida Varsity Tennis Players; Gainesville Area Tennis Association - school buses; db Racquet Club - tennis facility, tennis professionals, and prizes; USTA Florida Section - rackets, support, and prizes; and local USTA volunteers.

Note: USTA, Florida Section, District 4, includes the following counties; Alachua, Citrus, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Marion. This is only the 3rd "Tennis Carnival" to be held in Florida!
