Welcome to Technology Education!

This is a semester long class where 6th, 7th and 8th grade students spend half of their school year learning as much as they can about how we use technology in our lives everyday. Within the class, students excercise their critical thinking skills along with developing their teamwork and problem solving skills. Because this class is so comprehensive, this area of our website is divided into several pages to optimize download times.

6th Grade TechLab

Students in 6th grade can enroll in the Orientation to Technology class. During the semester, students learn the basics of technology ("What is Technology?") and how various technological principles affect their everyday lives. In this class, students are involved in several class projects including a structural unit where they build and test balsa wood bridges, as well as an aerodynamic unit where students build gliders and StratoBlastersTM.

8th Grade TechLab

Students in 8th grade spend about half of their semester working in module units of instruction. While on these units, students work in pairs learning about biotechnology, electronics, transportation, and structural technology. Students spend approximately one to one and a half weeks on each unit before being matched with a new partner on a new module.

Research & Design

During the semester, 8th grade students also particpate in two class projects. The first is Rocket Building and the second is a Research & Design unit. In the first unit, students are provided with materials to construct a rocket (similar to Estes Rockets) as they learn the basic prinicples of aerodynamics. In Research & Design, students start with a basswood blank and try to design "the perfect dragster." At the culmination of the unit, we have a fun filled day of racing, complete with trophies and other exciting prizes.

Technology Student Association

The Technology Student Association (TSA) is the only student organization devoted exclusively to the needs of technology education students who are presently enrolled in, or have completed, technology education courses.

It is composed of over 100,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in 2,000 schools/chapters spanning 45 states. TSA is supported by educators, parents, and business leaders who believe in the need for a technologically literate society and are working to achieve that goal.

The mission of the Technology Student Association is to prepare our membership for the challenges of a dynamic world by promoting technological literacy, leadership, and problem solving, resulting in personal growth and opportunity.

The technology classes are the basis for preparing students for state level competition each year. This is where our students really have the opportunity to show off what they have learned while enrolled in the Technology Education program at LBMS. Only students enrolled in Technology Classes are permitted to join TSA since having taken or being presently enrolled in the Orientation to Technology class is a prerequisite. Being a member of the TSA is a challenging and highly rewarding experience for these students.
