Commissioner Penny Wheat: Comprehensive Plan Mediation, July 15, 2003

The motion on the floor is to approve a settlement agreement. The 3rd "Whereas" clause on page 3 states that it is "in the Commission's best interests" to do so.
This settlement agreement may be in the best interests of the builder's association and some rural property owners, but there has been no evidence or testimony provided to suggest that it is in the best interests of the community of all people in Alachua County.
As President Andrew Jackson said many years ago, it is to be regretted that the powerful and the wealthy seek to bend the public interest to their private benefit.
