Commissioner Penny Wheat: Comprehensive Plan Mediation, July 15, 2003
The motion on the floor is to approve a settlement agreement. The 3rd
"Whereas" clause on page 3 states that it is "in the Commission's best interests" to do so.
This settlement agreement may be in the best interests of the
builder's association and some rural property owners, but there has
been no evidence or testimony provided to suggest that it is in the best
interests of the community of all people in Alachua County.
As President Andrew Jackson said many years ago, it is to be regretted
that the powerful and the wealthy seek to bend the public interest to
their private benefit.
