Commissioner Wheat Wrote...

Mike,

Thanks for the alert you posted the other day. Just wanted you to know that I sent your original post to County staff on Monday afternoon. Yesterday (Tuesday), I spoke with Chris Bird, EPD Director, whose staff had been on site. An email response should be provided to the Commision, and I will send it to you when I receive it. Rick,

Monday afternoon (late) I inquired as to the alleged cutting of cypress trees adjacent to Newnan's Lake, and today I have received additional calls about this issue.

It would seem that a permit would be required to cut the trees in this swamp. Has one been obtained? Has anyone yet determined the appropriate buffer required to protect the eagle's nests in or adjacent to the Newnan's Lake? Isn't there some language in the County plan that protects shorelines from such disturbance?

It also appears that perhaps this is actually a wetland associated with Paynes Prairie, which is an Outstanding Florida Water OFW). Though I cannot pinpoint the exact locations, I recall that there are some culverts in this area which lead to Paynes Prairie. Also, I seem to recall, in discussion about Best Management Practices (BMPs) for silviculture, that there is something about a primary zone around OFW's which is supposed to be a no-cut zone.

Can you answer these questions, and assist the Commission with the policy issues which surround this tree cutting adjacent to Newnan's Lake and Paynes Prairie?

Thanks,

Penny

Rick,

The message below appeared on the townsquare listserve. Can you check into the concern expressed about the trees being cut?

Thanks,

Penny
