St. Francis House
On any given night there are about 700 homeless children, women and men in Gainesville. It is a brutal fact of everyday life here in Alachua County in the 1990s.
The overall mission of St. Francis House is to provide emergency food, temporary shelter, and related support services in a safe, secure environment for people in Alachua County who, for whatever reason, find themselves homeless and hungry.
Going beyond these basic needs, our staff and volunteers introduce our guests to the many community resources available to resolve problems underlying their crises.
St. Francis House provides these services in a supportive environment where people can begin to manage their problems effectively and reestablish themselves as productive members of the community.
Food Service Volunteers help during our daily noon soup kitchen, bring in evening meals for or ouvernight guests, or help us serve our special Thanksgiving and Christmas/Hanukka meals.
Our Shelter Volunteers help check people into our overnight shelter, supervise laundry and showers, and provide emotional support to our guests in the evening. Some help daily, others once a week for a few hours.
St. Francis House is always looking for groups or individuals who would be interested in delivering an evening meal to the 30 guests who stay overnight at the shelter. After looking for work or housing all day, it is always a comfort to come "home" to a warm, home-cooked meal! Please call us at 378-9079 for more information.
