Alachua County EMWIN System
NWS Text Products Available

This page is a work in progress. The following products are updated regularly. As a new product is issued, the old one is overwritten. Click on a product to view the last-issued version of it. You can also use this list to see which products are of most interest to you when deciding which you would like us to send to send to your e-mail Inbox or to your text pager.

While your Inbox can handle any text product, pagers are a different story. We do not recommend sending just any product to your pager since most pagers have a limit of from 140 to 240 characters, and/or because your paging company may divide "pages" into 80-character sets, each of which might count as an additional page, which could end up costing you much more than you planned. For this reason, we recommend sending only watches and warnings to your pager. We have a special script which can abbreviate those to fit neatly in your display. For example, we can send only the important part of a watch or warning statement, such as "NWS-JAX HAS ISSUED A TORNADO WARNING FOR ALACHUA CO UNTIL 4:55 PM." And even that statement is durther abbreviated to "NWS-JAX HAS ISSD A TOR WRNG FOR ALACHUA CO TIL 4:55 PM".

If you have a cellphone with an unlimited text plan, then you probably won't be able to get enough from us. :)

Just write down which products you would like, and then send us an e-mail at acemwin@alachuaskywarn.org to let us know where to send them, how you would like them formatted, and which counties you would like covered. We can cover more than just Alachua County.

Local Area Civil Emergency Products (These products are actually planned for "local" broadcast over NWR and perhaps local TV and radio stations when local emergencies occur. These products were implemented into NWS dissemination Sept. 30, 2003. Obviously, some won't apply to our area. EM agencies in the NWS-JAX County Warning Area haven't much made use of these products yet, I have noted. But nonetheless, I have them prepared-for in the below list in case they ever are issued at some time or another. NWS-JAX *has* issued the CEM on earlier occasion. However, that stopped a while ago and none have been seen since 2003. UPDATE - SEP 16, 2008: These products ARE listed in the NOAA Data Management Catalog. There ARE other NWS Field Offices out there issuing them. ...Just not *NWS-JAX*. At one time in the past Al Sandrik did state to me that he considered the CEM and CAE products a huge pain in the a** because some of the EM agencies never knew what they were doing with them and because they always sent out far too many of them, duping them across many surrounding NWS agencies - which would cause repeated alarms and re-alarms. So he "unofficially" banned their use inside of NWS-JAX - at least under their official product identifiers. He *is* correct. In the beginning, it occurred very often. It still happens even TODAY, but to a much lesser degree. Still, the product identifiers are there and they should be used in their proper manner. There are other services which could make excellent good use of these bulletins in particular and bring much improved public service, but only if the proper product identifiers are used - religiously. But it can work only if EM and NWS get together and learn how to properly use these things. Right now, it's pot luck IF any of these are used locally. And if they are used, they're hidden under other product identifiers due to laziness on the part of the particular met issuing the bulletin. For example, many just generally get placed inside of the "ADM" bulletin, which was not exactly how that bulletin was mintended to be used. According to the NWSI instruction manual, the ADM is, if anything, to be used for followups/updates on the statuses of the other bulletins, NOT AS THE INITIAL DISTRIBUTING MEANS for issuing the bulletins. However, local NWS employees tend to see this particular bulletin as a lazy man's "catch all" whenever they don't want to actually type up a brand new bulletin under a separate identifier. This is not good because it could encourage other NWS employees at other NWSFOs to do the same. This can cause confusion. UPDATE - JUNE 22, 2009: I haven't seen much movement at all from local NWS or EM agencies in actually making these particular bulletins come to real effect locally in EMWIN, at least under their PROPER product identifiers, and it does not appear very likely that it ever will, now. When on very rare occasion they do use the below products, I have seen some of them being issued generically under other product identifiers that people wouldn't expect after looking at the database list, and for which EMWIN software is NOT able to properly be able to separate, sort out, and alarm for. NWS-JAX is NOT using the standard product identifier conventions in some bulletins and that seems a little inappropriate. I still leave them up here just in case it COULD come to fruition at some point in the future. At this time, AC-EMWIN *is* already set up and ready to handle these messages locally. Should they be issued locally, AC-EMWIN is already set up to redistribute them to the AC-SKYWARN Email Alert List.) ADR NWS ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE (EXTERNAL) A SERIOUS NOTE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT'S USAGE! This product is NOT designed to be used as a Civil Emergency Product. HOWEVER, I include it in here because many forecast offices across the country are using this very bulletin, meant as an ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS bulletin, to broadcast many of the below civil emergency bulletins. THEREFORE, alarming for the REAL products is near to impossible because even the NWS is not playing by their own message format and dissemination rules. By placing the civil products in the ADM message name instead of the BELOW messages, I am unable to alarm for their occurance, properly. ADR??? Latest ADR issued nationwide. ADRJAX NWS-JAX CWA.
