Grand Canyon, Arizona (1971)

I visit this immense canyon area with my family when I am 11 years old. The size cannot be imagined until one actually visits it. The site consists of 1,217,000 acres. It was proclaimed a Forest Reserve in 1893, a game preserve in 1906, a National Monument in 1908, a National Park in 1919, and more recently designated a World Heritage Site. Includes 178 miles of the Colorado River. Forces of erosion have exposed a huge variety of formations which illustrate vast periods of geological history.

About the photo: My sister Mary, and my brothers Nino and Anthony pose with me in front of the Grand Canyon when I am 11 years old and on a family vacation.
