Flat Rock is a peculiar yet oddly beautiful area just north of Plattsburgh, New York that I visit with a group of student-friends while attending SUNY at Plattsburgh. We are there to camp in a lean-to and canoe the lake. Peculiar because the legend is that several decades ago, an eccentric and wealthy individual owned the land in which a river ran through. Because of his desire to create a lake, he attempted to cover the entire valley with concrete (the concrete, he hoped, would prevent the water from seeping into the ground when he dammed the river). Today, his dam still exists as a testament to his comical and failed effort to try to manage nature to his whims. To this day, several acres of the valley are covered with concrete, and we canoe the small lake that still manages to exist.
