Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico (1971)

I visit and am awestruck by these huge caverns with my family at the age of 11. An elevator takes us down to the caverns. At the surface, we are impressed by the White Sands Missile Range, where there is a huge area of pure white sand dunes that we kids are happy to play in.

The Caverns are 47,000 acres in size, including 33,000 acres of wilderness area. The Caverns were proclaimed a National Monument in 1923, and established as a National Park in 1930. It is a series of connected caverns with one of the world's largest underground chambers. The Caverns contain countless formations. To the right is a photo of the "Hall of Giants."
