Gainesville-related Resources
(Or: I gave up on trying to index the entire Alachua Freenet)
Here is a collection of other net resources related to Gainesville. I decided
that trying to include all of the numerous resources that are on Alachua
Freenet and other local ISP's would be both a hassle
and duplicative. So I'll only include the more significant hilights of
such, as well as any "metaindexes". I will also present as much additional
information as possible.
Weather
Local Media
Links to various locally based media, primarily news and entertainment.
Useful summaries and "inside" information included wherever possible.
Print
Gainesville has numerous locally printed and distributed publications.
Not many years ago, there was really only the Gainesville Sun and the Alligator,
but now there are many others. Some that have appeared have fallen by the
wayside, but the market is still diverse. There are also a variety of 'zines.
The Gainesville Sun
Originally called "The Gainesville Bee" many decades ago, they are now
owned by the New York Times. They are the only major local newspaper, but
have earned nicknames such as "The Gainesville Scum" and "The Gainesville
Mullet Wrapper".
The Independant Florida Alligator
A student run newspaper, the Alligator is one of the biggest student college
papers in the country, and is run entirely independant of the University
of Florida. Back in the 70's, due to some controversial reporting, UF threw
the student paper off campus, which promptly established itself as an Independant
student paper.
Moon Magazine
Cleverly named as the opposite of the Gainesville Sun, this is the biggest
alternative press in town except for the Alligator.
The Gainesville Iguana
An alternative newspaper, which focuses primarily on feminist issues (pro-choice,
gay and bi rights, etc.). Like many of the alternate press in town, they
rely soley on advertising to stay afloat and are more interested in their
goals then making big profits.
The Free Press
This was an attempt to produce a Libertariain newspaper that would follow
the original creed of journalism... Print Anything. The intention was to
print anything that was submitted, assuming it wasn't gibberish.
It was not intended to cater to any specific set of political beliefs...
It has pretty much folded, unfortunately.
Television
There's four TV stations based in this area, though only two of them actually
broadcast from within Gainesville.
WUFT Channel 5
Our local PBS station, which is run from the University of Florida Journalism
building on campus. This is an excellent PBS station.
WCJB TV-20
Our local ABC affiliate. Not very much exciting to say about them.
WOGX TV-51
Our local FOX affiliate. They broadcast a few miles outside of Gainesville
and cater to both Gainesville and our Arch-Nemises, Ocala. A good station
that's always been nice to the slavering hoardes of science fiction fans
by giving us all the Star Trek shows and even Babylon-5.
W69Y
A Christian repeater station. The story behind
this is an interesting one, but with a sad ending...
Radio
There are an amazing number of radio stations in and around this town.
Unfortunately, most of them blow chunks the size of Bill Clinton. However,
we manage to make do with collections of CD's and tapes...
WRUF FM - 103.7
Also known as "Rock 104", this commercial rock station is housed on the
University of Florida campus. Eh? Odd, but true. In fact, the UF Journalism
building houses 2 TV stations and 3 radio stations...
WUFT Classic 89 - 89.1
This is the PBS radio counterpart to WUFT Channel 5.
They primarily play classical music, though the range of classical includes
Jazz, celtic music, and even old radio shows on "Theatre Of The Mind".
Miscellaneious
Municipal Links
The more tedious and boring govermental stuff.
