The net.genre Hierarchy
(Or: Where everybody knows you're a dog)
This is the official webpage for the net.genre hierarchy in Usenet
II. Here is where the overall charter for the hierarchy will be available,
as well as general information relating to the hierarchy. Links to sub-hierarchies
FAQ's and/or charters will also be placed here, when possible.
The Charter
This is the first-draft of the net.genre hierarchy.
Our Purpose
The purpose of the net.genre hierarchy is for groups to discuss
fictional works that fit into a genre (I.E. category). This includes the
discussion of written material (books, magazines, electronic text, etc.),
movies, TV shows, and other works that may fit into a genre (I.E. video
games, made-for-video releases, radio shows, etc). It is not intended
to be the sole discussion place for such material! The net.theatre hierarchy
exists for discussion of both theatrical productions and the art (and even
labor) of producing theatrical productions, for example. "Some crossover
is ok".
The term "genre" in regards to this hierarchy means a category or type
of fictional work that applies to multiple media forms. This includes Science
Fiction, Comedy, Horror, Mystery, Romance, etc. At this time, only the
Science Fiction/Speculative Fiction genre exists within the hierarchy.
Other sub-hierarchies will be generated as demand warrants.
Things that do not belong to the net.genre hierarchy:
detailed technical discussions, discussions about music (excluding musicals,
if the need should arise), discussions about food. Those topics already
have their own hierarchies.
Procedures and Rules
If there is not an existing group in the net.genre hierarchy
that fits a topic you wish to discuss, please open the discussion in the
net.genre.other
group.
If you want to request (demand, beg, order) a new group or sub-hierarchy
be created in the net.genre hierarchy, please post a message opening
the topic in the net.genre.config
group. Cross-posting to net.config
or other configuration-oriented groups is ok, but please don't cross-post
to general content groups. Instead, direct folks in those groups to the
appropriate place to discuss configuration.
If you have a complaint to make about a particular group or sub-hierarchy,
report it to the czar responsible for said group or hierarchy. net.genre
currently has several sub-czars (aka minions) who are listed in
the Usenet II Czars list.
If you can not find the relevant person there, send mail to the net.genre
Czar: czar-net-genre@usenet2.org
Misc. Info
Background
The net.genre hierarchy was created along with a number of other
groups when Usenet II was born. It
was originally proposed by Jeff Mercer in net.config
when Usenet II was in it's early
days of testing and configuration discussion.
Your Czar
The czar for net.genre is Jeff Mercer, the bloke who originally
put forth the idea for the hierarchy, and who volunteered for the job when
the time came. For more information on him, check out his personal
homepage.
