GATOR TENNIS CAMP, and ALL GATOR CAMPS

Any chance of getting in a plug in one of your email letters for the Gator Tennis Camp held at the University of Florida this coming summer? Last summer saw 350 campers get a real workout and true tennis experience under the watchful eyes of Coaches Andy Brandi and Ian Duvenhage. We are hoping to duplicate those numbers this coming summer.

ALACHUA COUNTY FOREVER--LAND SELECTION

Now that ACF is a reality the Land Conservation Board is looking at properties nominated for acquisition. I'm sure that there is some vista, some place you have wanted to hike through (or do already), some natural area close to your heart which you want to see last forever, but which is privately owned. http://www.co.alachua.fl.us/~acepd/

OLD BACKPACKS NEEDED

Mary Ranc collects used backpacks and fills them with personal hygiene products, and then donates them to homeless people. College students completing the spring semester and parents planning to buy their children new backpacks in the fall, are encouraged to donate their old backpacks to Ranc. Donations of toiletries are also needed. Collection points include Room 417 in the architecture building at the University of Florida, and Ranc's home at 631 NW 36th St.

SKATEBOARD PARKS, and CITIZEN'S MANDATES CLASH

Skateboard parks, in the works for almost 2 years, are ready for bid and construction. The final locations are Lynch Park, Lincoln Park, and behind the pool at Citizen's Field. The fourth site is on hold. Two problems surfaced. The drainage problems at Northeast Park have raised an entire series of questions yet to be resolved.

The larger problem is that the citizen's "don't-pave-the-trail" mandate prohibits Gainesville from paving roads, pools, tennis courts, building foundations, etc. in the Hogtown watershed--all of Western Gainesville--including skateboard ramps.

I believe the intent of the resolution was to stop paving a trail, and that "no new parks" is an unintended consequence voters do not support. I've asked Gainesville to clarify this issue. Alternate language was already developed to prevent trail paving and still allow other needed facilities and roads. It may come to a citizen's vote within the next year.

COMMENTS:

Oh, I got hit by a car a couple of weeks [ago]. I was riding along SW 24th Ave. when this jerk hit me from behind. I was lying out cold on the road for 5-10 minutes before the ambulance arrived. Had a few cracked ribs and 12 stitches in my head - sore all over, but OK - just now getting back to normal.

(This one touched me)

Dear Alison;
I was about to send you an email requesting that you take me off your list, then I looked at the Rec Connection I was replying to for your address. There was so much helpful stuff even for some one who lives in Lake County that I decided I'd rather stay on the list.

I am particularly appreciative of your emphasis of the children's cancer art site at http://www.friendsforlife.com . My son, James Webb, died 6 months ago in Gainesville in the wake of his 3rd relapse. I am thankful for the Arts in Medicine program at Shands of which Dr. John Graham-Pole has been a strong supporter of; it gave my son many happy hours while he was in the hospital. At least 2-3 of the ceiling tiles at Shands were painted by James.

Another children's cancer site you might want to emphasize is http://www.themiraclekids.com . This site was developed by the grandfather of a child who received a bone marrow transplant at Shands (who is alive and doing fairly well, BTW), and it has become a focus of support, prayer and information for families whose children are fighting "the beast". James has two pages; one, the last "regular" page (which is accessible only by the direct URL of http://www.themiraclekids.com/james.htm ) and his "memorial" page which is accessible via http://www.themiraclekids.com/mem-james.htm or via the menus.
