Lee Recumbent Statue

The recumbent statue of Lee in the Lee Chapel is one of the most powerful symbols of the Lost Cause.  Located directly above the Lee family crypt in the statue chamber, the statue was executed by Edward V. Valentine based on  a meticulous series of measurements and plaster casts.  The works, dedicated in 1883 by Stonewall Jackson's daughter Julia, depicts Lee asleep on the field of battle.
