Stories

by Russ Portier

To start things off, I should at least mention a little bit about my writing. A short history of my literary development, if you will.

I started writing back when I was in 7th grade, thanks to a writing teacher that had a great deal of leniency towards creativity. Some of these pieces are actual submissions to that class, horrible in their authenticity.

Between 7th and 11th grade, I focused all of my writing strength on a long story that was originally based off of Piers Anthony's Xanth series, and then mutated into something . . . unspeakable. It's here, too, in three parts called "Galaxy Fire." The original Xanth part is omitted, for no reason other than that I've lost that part. I'm sure I have it on a floppy disk somewhere . . .

11th grade saw a slight maturing of my work, when I took another creative writing class. This also introduced me to poetry writing, which I still occassionally dabble in, although the last few years it has been directed solely at love poems for my girlfriend, now wife.

Some of the pieces are slightly more recent. The collection of short stories that I've labelled as "Post-Apocalyptic" were all written over a three month period while travelling in Europe, and then during my first semester in college.

I did manage to get one ultra-short flash fiction story published back in 2003, on the website Anotherealm.com, and that is the story I've titled "Rejected". It was renamed "Trick or Treat" for the website, to fit in with a Halloween competition they were running at the time. It still shows up on a Google search, but I can't find it in their archives, so I guess it's okay for me to post it back up here.

I've added a few other comments here and there to the beginnings of my stories, so I won't waste any more time here to the main website. Not all of my stories really speak for themselves. Also note, some of the formatting is a little funky on the stories. I'll be fixing that over time, but I wanted to get things back online.

By the way, for any of you who had previously visited my website, and are now wondering where all my other stuff has gone . . . I decided it was about time to get rid of some of the unprofessional things I had stashed about my previous websites (i.e. the graphical day-by-day account of my former roommates and I stacking post-consumption soda cans). Not that many of my stories could really be considered "professional", but it's art, dammit! I was young and foolish!
