Pack 454 Newsletter: January 2007

Welcome to the new year! I am your new committee chair, Angela Bacsik. The newsletter will now be coming from me instead of from Tabitha, who will now be serving as our Camping Chair. I am the mother of a Wolf Scout, so I'm fairly new to the Cub Scout program and welcome all the help and information I can get, so please feel free to give me ideas and explain how it's been done before so I avoid reinventing any wheels. If you're looking for information on Pack 454, you can check out our website at: http://www.afn.org/~pack454/new.htm

JANUARY PACK MEETING -- JAN 16 -- 7 pm -- Trinity UMC -- 4000 NW 53 Ave.
We will be having our January Pack meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, Jan 16 at Trinity United Methodist in Worship Center Side A. At this meeting our boys will be receiving their advancement awards and many of our Second Year Webelos will be earning their Arrow of Light, which is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn. Also, if you are registered for the Fort Clinch campout, you must pay the camping fees at this pack meeting. There is a very long waiting list for this campout, and if you haven't paid by the Jan 16 pack meeting, we'll need to start calling those folks on the waiting list. Den Leaders will need to sign their dens up for one of the two service projects on Jan 27 (see below). Den Leaders will also need to fill out their neighborhood requests for the Scouting for Food service project we'll be doing in March (see below). We will also have an important campfire safety presentation by one of our pack parents, Mark Smith, who is a local Fire Marshall. There will be an opportunity to order reduced price tickets to the upcoming Harlem Globetrotters event at the O'Connell Center. We'll also have some fliers announcing a fundraiser for the Keira Grace Foundation, which was founded by the parents of one of our scouts after their family endured his and his sister's battles with leukemia. Please see their website for more information on the foundation and the fundraiser at: www.keiragracefoundation.com

DEADLINE FOR ORDERING AWARDS -- JAN 31 AT 5 PM
The deadline for ordering your den awards for the February meeting, which is also the Blue & Gold Banquet, is earlier than usual. Get them to Gina Cox by Jan 31 at 5 pm so you'll have them on time. This time of year the Scout Shop can have items on backorder, and we don't want any disappointed scouts.

BLUE & GOLD BANQUET -- FEB 10 -- 5:30 pm -- TRINITY UMC -- 4000 NW 53 AVE
Our February pack meeting will be our annual Blue & Gold Banquet, where we honor our Webelos 2 Scouts as they complete their Cub Scout journey. Please note that Feb. 10 is a Saturday, not a Tuesday.

PINEWOOD DERBY
The Pinewood Derby pit crew, lead by Chris Vought, has things well in hand for our Pinewood Derby events. If you have time to volunteer to help with these exciting events, contact Chris Vought at CVBMW5@aol.com. The events are as follows:
Derby Car Workshop -- Saturday, January 6, at 9:30 am at Innovative Machine, Inc.
Test and Tune -- Monday, January 15th from 10 am to 2:30 in the Trinity UMC Youth Building
Weigh-In -- Friday, January 19, at Trinity UMC -- Tiger and Wolf Scouts at 6:00 pm / Bear and Webelos Scouts at 7:00 pm
Race Day -- Saturday, January 20 -- Check-in starts at 8 am, Race starts at 9 am at Trinity UMC

JANUARY SERVICE PROJECTS -- JAN 27
Last year some of the younger cub scouts and their families found the Great Air Potato Round-Up too strenuous, so we've decided to offer a choice of projects this January. For those of you whose dens would still like to do the Air Potato service project, have your den sign up at the pack meeting and I'll register your den for the Great Air Potato Round-Up by den. It's a great service to the community and helps preserve native plants by removing those invasive AP's. For those dens that would rather focus their efforts on a service to the school most of our boys attend, we've scheduled a clean-up of the USA garden and the natural ecosystem area at Talbot on the same day starting at
8:30 am. If your den would prefer to participate in the Talbot clean-up, sign your den up for this project at the pack meeting.

CAMP BUC TUOCS -- FEB 2 - 4 -- at Camp Shands in Melrose
Our Camping Chair (and former fearless leader) Tabitha Vought is finalizing plans for our pack dinner on Saturday night, which will be Fried Chicken. While the pack provides the meat for the pack dinner, each den will need to provide side dishes to round out the meal. Dens have been assigned the following food categories, so please have each family in attendance bring one dish (that feeds 8-10 people) of something from your assigned category:
Dens 1, 9, and 10 -- Salads (pasta, garden, and fruit)
Den 2 -- Rolls and Butter
Dens 3 and 4 -- Desserts
Dens 5 / 11 and 8 -- Veggies (green beans, corn, potatoes, etc.)
Dens 6 and 12 -- Sides (Mac & Cheese, Beans, Coleslaw)
Check in begins at 5 pm on Friday and check out is by 11 am on Sunday. This is really a great opportunity to earn belt loops and it's also a lot of fun for everyone.

FORT CLINCH CAMPOUT -- MARCH 2-4
You must pay the camping fees for this campout by the Jan. 16 pack meeting. The cost is $10 per person ages 6 and over (younger siblings must still be registered to attend). Please contact Tabitha Vought, our Camping Chair if you have any questions or can't make it to the meeting but want to complete your registration for this campout. We are also planning a pack meal for Saturday night at the Fort Clinch campout, and like the one at Buc Tuocs, you'll be asked to bring a side dish for Saturday night's dinner. Entrance fees for Fort Clinch itself are $2 per person and are not included in the camping fees. You should have some cash on hand to pay for this at the Fort's front gate, since everyone won't be touring the Fort at the same time.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD -- MARCH 10
Dens will need to make requests for neighborhood assignments so that we can coordinate the Scouting for Food collection effort. A neighborhood assignment request sheet will also be available at the pack meeting.

POPCORN SALES PRIZES ARE IN AND MOST HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED
If you haven't received your prizes for popcorn sales, contact Jen Davis or myself at the pack meeting. (I have the awards for den 5.)

CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP
Mark your calendar now for the fun packed Cub Scout Day Camp on June 4-8, 2007. We will need many volunteers to help out with this event as well as Scouts to have fun and learn cool things.

COMMITTEE MEETING -- JAN 28 at 5:30 pm -- Room E225 at Trinity UMC
Our next Pack 454 Committee Planning Meeting, to which everyone is invited but all leaders are expected to attend as often as possible, is Jan 28 at 5:30 pm in Room E225 at Trinity UMC. This is where we plan our service projects, campouts, and other events, so join us and share your ideas and talents!
