Sigsbee Lee Scruggs, Jr.

The game of life was finally over for Lee Scruggs on Friday, January 8, 1999. His final game on the court or field was a basketball game the previous night.

The Mid-Florida Officials Association mourns the loss of this long-time member, mentor and friend.

The career of Lee Scruggs:

43 years as a football official

years as a basketball official

years as a softball umpire

years as a baseball umpire

3 years as a volleyball official

He served the MFOA in the following capacities:

2005 has been the inaugural season for middle school basketball in Alachua County.  At the end of the year the champion boys and girls teams were awarded a trophy named in honor of LEE SCRUGGS.  There will be a permanent trophy will move from school to school, like our Sportsmanship Award, and a trophy which each school will retain.  Superintendent Dan Boyd said that Jim Niblack, former Gainesville High football coach, approached him about naming the trophy in Lee's honor.  Coach Niblack raised enough funds to pay for the trophy.  At the end of the season the trophies were awarded by Lee's daughter Sherry.  Lee grew up in Gainesville and graduated from Gainesville High.  He was an athlete in many sports, at several levels.  After his playing days were over he joined the Mid-Florida Officials Association and called football and basketball for us for many years.  During that time he also served as an officer of the Association.  He also worked softball, baseball and volleyball games.   Lee died the morning after working a basketball game, in January of 1999.  The webmaster thanks Dr. Boyd, Alachua County Athletic Director Charley Wise and Sherry Scruggs for their assistance on this article.
