CLASS SYLLABUS

CGS 1570 - COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

INSTRUCTOR: DR. SUSAN E. THRALL email:thralls@mail.lakecity.cc.fl.us

I. Purpose and Objectives of Course

This course covers the three major uses of computers in the business world: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management. It includes hands-on experience with microcomputers. The specific software that we will use is Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Access.

Objectives:

1. Define word processing and use Word to perform word processing tasks.

2. Define electronic spreadsheets and use Excel to perform spreadsheet tasks.

3. Define database management and use Access to perform database tasks including defining and entering a database, perform database queries, sort the database, and do reports.

II. General Class Policies

1. The rules and regulations of Lake City Community College and the State of Florida will be observed in this class. Refer  to  the college catalog for information.

2. Attendance: Students should try to attend all classes. I am required by LCCC to record attendance. Successful completion of this course is highly correlated to class attendance. Try to be absent only when necessary, for example for sickness, jury duty, children illness, etc. Do NOT bring your children to class; it is distracting to the teacher and other students. If you decide to stop coming to this class, please go to the registrar's office and complete withdrawal procedures. I generally do NOT do the paperwork to withdraw you. If I fill out the paperwork to withdraw you myself, your grade will be posted as an F, not a W.

3. Making up missed work: Students who miss a class are responsible for any assignments and still getting them in on time. (See 4 below regarding late work.) Any material covered in class, in addition to material in the textbook, is "fair game" on tests and examinations. No makeups on midterm or final exam will be given without a written excuse from a medical doctor.

4. Late Work: Assignments not turned in at a specified time shall be considered late and will NOT be accepted. Exception: You may obtain from the lab workers a coupon good for ONE late assignment "no questions asked". To use the coupon, write your name and the project number on the coupon and staple it to the late assignment. Any assignment with coupon attached must be turned in by the last day of class (not the day of the final exam) - no exceptions! If you do not use the coupon at all during the semester, bonus points will be calculated into your homework assignment average at the end of the term. No bonus points will be given to students who have not turned in all assignments.

5. Tardiness: For the mutual benefit of all, it is necessary that classes start and stop on time. To achieve this goal, it is requested that all students be on time to class.

6. Class Participation: Students are expected to keep up with work covered in class. It is advised that students take notes during class lectures.

7. Academic Honesty: Students are expected to do their own work in this class. Cheating will not be tolerated. The student handbook defines cheating as " use of anyone's else's work ... as your own". The penalty for the first offense is a zero on that assignment. This will apply to all parties involved. Any subsequent infractions may be turned over to student court for disciplinary action. Do your own work! You must type in and print out your own work.

    1. Lake City Community College seeks to provide reasonable accommodations for all qualified individuals with disabilities. This college will adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations as required to afford equal educational opportunity. It is the student's responsibility to register with the Office of Disabled Student Services, at extension 1393, and to contact faculty members in a timely manner to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
    2. The computer lab is a combination classroom/laboratory. Because of the sensitive nature of electronic devices, there is a no-food-or-drink rule in the area of the machines. This lab is also a no tobacco (including smokeless tobacco) area. Please clean up after yourself and do not leave scraps of paper behind. Do not make marks on the tables or equipment. Please dispose of chewing gum in the trash cans, not under desks, chairs, computers. When you leave the lab, make sure you exit properly the program you are working with and that Windows 95 is displayed on the screen.
    3. Turn off all cell phones during class.
