[1552] Born in Heltonville, IN to Elijah Helton and Dessie Mae Southern. Brothers: Lloyd, Burl and Edward(Buck). Sisters: Louise Southern, Mabel(Harry) Chanbers, Nannie(Buck) Carroll and Naomi Hays. She worked in Bloomington in her late teenage years as domestic help and nanny somewhere near Adams and 11th St. John would see her walking to church services at the Pentecostal church at that corner and wait for her and follow her home. She did not like him at first because he would not go to church but he was very handsome and persistant and she finally agreed to let him walk with her and found him to be charming and a gentleman. They married on May 10, 1919 and had 3 sons: Lloyd, John and Forrest. She and John originally purchased a home in the Hensonburg area of Bloomington and raised their family there. Sometime in the 1940's they purchased a 120 acre farm on Cowden Rd east of Ellettsville, IN. They sold the farm for $10,000.00 in 1960 due to John's poor health from a bout with tuberculosus and moved into Ellettsville where they lived on Vine St till the end of their lives. When she was in her 30's she had an operation at the local hospital. The anesthesia caused her hair to turn a bright yellow blond (she had been a dark brunnette). This caused her a lot of trouble with her church friends and her sisters who thought she had bleached her hair like the "harlots" in the movies and told her she was going to hell. They eventually realized that she had nothing to do with it and "forgave" her. She had that bright blonde hair till the day she died with only a little bit of grey mixed in. She wanted to start wearing slacks in her later years and the pressure from her sisters and church leaders kept her from going against the "laws of God"
