When Nuby Shealy opened his general store at the corner of a sleepy crossroads in the midst of a still very wild Ocala National Forest in 1934, someone told him he'd be lucky to last three months.
He stayed for more than 75 years.
Shealy died Feb. 8 at Munroe Regional Medical Center at the age of 99.
The store, now a Texaco, is still known locally as Nuby's Texaco, though the business has changed owners several times in the decades since Shealy sold it and retired in 1973. In 1996, the area at the intersection of State Road 40 and County Road 314 was officially named "Nuby's Corner" by then Gov. Lawton Chiles.
Nuby was born in northwest Marion County near Blitchton, but he saw the potential for opening what amounted to a frontier store at the edge of a sparsely populated area that was an increasingly popular destination for tourists and outdoorsmen. It was also in his genes. His father owned a general store in Zuber, where Nuby Shealy worked as a child.
"There were probably only about 25 families that lived in the area at that time," said Marshall Underwood, a lifelong resident of the Forest who remembers the store as the hub of activity in the area during his childhood and through much of his young adulthood.
"The store was everything to us," Underwood said. "It's where we bought what we ate. It's where we got our gas, our feed, everything. It's where people drank coffee and talked to one another and found out what was going on in the area." In addition to the regulars, hunters and tourists were frequent visitors.
"The day before hunting season opened, we wouldn't close the store," said George Shealy, Nuby Shealy's son. "It was open all night. People would be in there buying supplies. That was one of our busiest times of the year."
In the Nov. 18, 1960, edition of the Star Banner, a classified ad reads: "NUBY SHEALY WILL BE OPEN ALL NIGHT... To serve hunters with licenses, permits and hunting supplies."
The ad lists no address and no phone number. People just knew. Spring was another brisk time for trade.
"That's when all the tourists would come to visit Silver Springs," George Shealy said.
But it was Nuby Shealy's humanity that defined him and made him a beloved fixture in the community.
"He was a country boy," said Underwood. "He was easygoing. He never got mad with anybody and would always try to help." For the locals, business was done on credit.
"You'd go in and get what you want and he'd write it down in a book and you'd sign," Underwood said. "At the end of the week, when you got your check, he'd cash it for you and you'd settle up your bill." If there was no check at the end of the week, Nuby would work it out.
"He had a heart for everybody," Underwood said. "If you were down, you didn't have to worry about it. He'd just have you sign the book."
George Shealy, who worked in the store for most of his early life, also remembers his father's generosity.
"He helped people out all the time," he said. "If they couldn't afford milk or bread, he'd make arrangements for them to get it." And he was always there for his customers.
"We lived in the back of the store, and one night this man came up in the wee hours of the morning and woke him up," Shealy said. "My daddy opened the store for him and all he bought was a penny box of matches." But sometimes it wasn't merchandise customers sought.
"Another time, a man had him open the store at night, but he didn't want to buy anything. He just wanted somebody to talk with," he said.
Nuby Shealy lent an ear.
"That's the kind of thing he did," said George Shealy.
But as he got older, Nuby Shealy and his wife, Wilma, found it more difficult to run the store. They hoped George would take over. In 1966, they moved into a new building across the street from where the original stood.
"I went to school and majored in forestry and, when I got out of the Army, I helped them run the store for a while, but I didn't want to take it over," George Shealy said. They eventually sold the store, but the couple didn't go far.
"They moved into a place a little way down the road," George Shealy said.
For the rest of his life, Nuby Shealy continued to be a loyal customer to his former store.
"He would come by once a week or every other week to get some milk and gas," said Janak Patel, whose father now owns the store.
Shealy would use a cane or walker, but more recently he was having a harder time walking. "We'd go to the car and we'd ask him what he wanted and we would bring it to him," Patel said. "He was a real sweet man."
Nuby Shealy is also survived by four brothers, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Wilma, died in 2004. They were married for 71 years.
He was buried in the Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist Church cemetery on Thursday, about three miles from Nuby's Corner.
