Dear Friend of Education:
I am pleased to let you know that, with your help, I am willing to continue working for Alachua County's public schools, in the District 2 School Board seat. Since I undertook this service, I have become very familiar with our schools, their programs and needs, and the financial constraints placed on our district. I've listened to your concerns and those of other parents, teachers, and businesses in our community. I believe we are going in the right direction. During my tenure, the Board:
Raised academic expectations, graduation requirements, and behavior standards, resulting in higher achievement and many award-winning programs.
Adopted safety plans upon recommendations from the Violence Prevention Task Force and hired a district safety director to coordinate between schools and law enforcement in order to assure safer learning conditions.
Lowered the school millage rate while continuing to renovate and improve facilities.
Promoted greater community interaction and involvement in schools by supporting the Strategic Planning process, involving over 700 local public school advocates.
Personally, I have worked for the creation of a statewide on-line high school, allowing our students to take high school courses by computer. In addition, I have served on a statewide commission to assure higher standards of qualification for teachers. Improving communication between our schools and those we serve has been my highest priority. I have focused on responding promptly to concerns brought to my attention and transmitting pertinent information to resolve problems.
I am proud of the honors and awards our students and schools have earned and of the progress we have made. Nevertheless, achieving the goal of ensuring that the education offered to Alachua County students is second to none still leaves much to do.
