Independent Student Coalition

Statement Of Principles

The members of the Independent Student Coalition are committed to the principles of true democracy. Included among those principles is the need for a fully and properly functioning representative body. This entails the existence of representation of the minority and the professional, responsible, and ethical attitude of each representative. A representative body such as this would sincerely address the needs and wants of the student body as a whole. We do not believe that the Student Government today, nor in the past, has lived up to this standard.

Recognizing the need for such a change, the Independent Student Coalition is committed to the principle of independence, both for our group and for its individual members. We encourage the expression of ideas and their full and open debate. We intend to serve you, the Student Body, by providing the education and information needed for expression and the vehicles for action which are necessary for the existence of true democratic government.

Our vision of Student Government is that it should not be a training ground for corruption and ineptitude in professional politics. It should instead provide an example of what should and could be true representative democracy. Furthermore, Student Government should no longer contribute to the apathy, distrust, and disgust of the Student Body. It should instead provide the Student Body with an example of government worthy of their trust and encouraging their participation, allowing them to fulfill their role as citizens of the community.
