Organizational Foundation Notes -- Fall 93
Student Coalition LONG TERM: To create a "community" among students that exists continually by providing the element of crystallization around which all can gather. Thus providing a means of both educating ourselves and others and a vehicle for action. Internal UF and External World functions. Internal - student government reform (providing proper representation, effective means of change, educational tool, model of what government "should" be); Campus community cultural events - a means of "growing" community. External - involvement in the world around us - local, state, national, world. SHORT TERM: To create the fundemental statement defining the coalition. To install the basic structural element of the group so that it can begin to function. To gather together the resources (people) already somewhat recruited. To begin to reach out to the rest of the community and to recruit them. To form a "party" for fall elections with full slate and proper procedures, beginning to voice the desires of the group. Group (permanent) / Election (semi-permanent) dichotomy BRAINSTORM: Need for group - need for change - lack of representation - no true voice of students - lack of desire in present system for real change - domination of the system - apathy among the popln - disgust among the popln - poor model, poor example for the future - creating more unethical, bad representatives for real world Identify inconsistencies/problems in SG - constitution is self-contradicting - lack of professional/responsible attitude - BK/Greek domination - poor representation districts - poor election laws - too low of voter turnout for "true" government - inconsistent money policy - domination in executive branch - not enough "education" of masses on goings on - students "hate" the system - lack of use of the resources of the university - SG's spending on University responsibilities (regist) Identify unadressed problems/needs on campus Thoughts on districts: - no party affiliation "officially" - no significance on ballot given - no positions in senate based upon - problem - committees such as R&A - want to ensure the representation of minorities - so some means of identifying must be given. - At-large seats as opposed to districts - or, separate the frat/sorority rows as districts in and of themselves. - minimum percentage of votes for valid election - limitations on spending - SG sponsored "encouragement" to vote - SG sponsored information on all candidates - emphasis on a model of true representation of minorities - needs: - analysis of past elections - analysis of student apathy - analysis of student disgust - analysis of minority non-representation - analysis of district demographics - analysis of student desires - analysis of student awareness Spending: - analysis of recent changes in fiscal policy - analysis of distribution of funds (at least 5 yr) - analysis of growth of rec sports - analysis of "group" spending (growth and loss)
