This is the essence of what is wrong in our society -- in our politics. And the most unsettling thing about it is that we -- at the University of Florida -- are preparing the future politicians of the state and nation. And those that we are preparing are Kevin and his pals. What we are doing is a disservice to the future - in two basic ways (actually three). First -- we are providing a training ground for corruption and coercion and unethical and irresponsible government for those who want to PLAY politics. Second -- we are denying ourselves the perfect opportunity to educate a new generation of political leaders that can learn HOW government OUGHT to be run. SG ought to be a model -- not of the real, corrupt thing -- but of a model of what could and ought to be. IT should be an arean to try new ideas - and a means to give experience to those who could change it in the "real" world alter. Third -- we are doing an even greater disservice and damage to the future of this nation, in that we should be teaching people -- ALL the students -- how to be effective political leaders in the role of citizen. We should be teaching them what to expect of government and how to demand it and see it through. We should be teaching them how to participate -- and to participate -- in such a manner that every four years 39,000 students leave the University and become active leaders in their community demanding reform of our state and nation. All we are currently teaching them is to be apathetic -- stay uninformed, uninvolved. I can think of no greater crime being perpetrated at this state's universities than this. We are being denied, as a nation, the only viable avenue of political reform. As for your comments, I suggest the following. E-Mail the Alligator -- tell them what you feel -- tell them what you think -- tell them what you demand. They often begin to believe the big lie spread by Kevin and his FBK buddies -- the Student Body >>likes<< what they are doing -- they are happy, or at least content. They need to hear it from you. There letters to the editor e-mail address is letters@afn.org. Additionally, tell it to Kevin -- you'll get a really revealing response -- as to how hard he works and how he really cares and all the great stuff he is doing. And he'll probably say that you have simply been lied to by people like myself. His e-mail address is kmayeux@sg.ufl.edu I would also encourage you to cc: any letters you send to the Independent Majority - indepm@freenet.ufl.edu - in this way they cannot pretend as if your letters never existed.
