Date: Wed, 19 Jul 1995 16:14:19 -0400 From: Steven Gregory Carlino To: kmayeux@sg.ufl.edu, indepm@freenet.ufl.edu Subject: free speech Dear Mr. Mayeux, Appearently you must not understand your responsiblities as the Student Body President at the Universtiy of Florida. Your job is to be an advocate for the student body. How could you think you are doing your job, when you act out of your own malice. This is another example of right-wing elitism, thinking they know what is best for everyone involved. Instead of just making this ruling, did you ever think to put up to referendum and th elet the sutdents that you represent vote on this all important matter. As a student leader you were elected to work for the students, and not for your own political ambitions and intents. Free Speech is on of this countries most sacred institutions. I recently had a run in with a speech code at my own school. This incident stemmed from an article that I wrote that was in the Student newspaper. I stood my ground, and fought for my First amendment rights, because I believed in my rights. The politically correct attitudes that are permiatting from college campuses is a shame. Colleges should be bastions of novel thoughts and expression, not a place for repression and speech codes. Many of our new ideas and theories come form college campuses. I think you better rethink your position and your reasons for serving in the capacity that you do. Sincerely, Steven Carlino e-mail sc113294@oak.cats.ohiou.edu Commissioner of State and Federal Affairs Ohio University Student Senate -- S.G. Carlino
