Author Jennifer Van Bergen will speak about the Constitution, Democracy and the War on Terror, at the Civic Media Center, Tuesday July 25th, 7:30PM. The CMC is at 1021 W. University Ave.

Van Bergen is the author of The Twilight of Democracy: The Bush Plan for America (Common Courage Press, 2004) She is one of the foremost authorities on the USA Patriot Act, and has been writing and speaking about civil liberties, human rights, and international law in the United States and Europe since the 2000 election. She was also one of the first critics to raise concerns about torture under the Bush Regime.

Van Bergen will talk about America's parallel legal systems and why they present a danger to democracy. With a law degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and as a former adjunct faculty member at the New School for Social Research, Van Bergen understands the law in detail and articulates that understanding to others in a simple but yet intelligent way.
