Summer warms up at the Civic Media Center
Joe Courter
July/August 1999

July and August shaped up with a varied lineup of activities for the Civic Media Center, Gainesville's Reading Room and Library of the Non-corporate press. For users of the library, the video over 320 tapes and over 500 audio tapes, and our books now number over 2000, including a new fiction section. There is also a new and huge Zine library. You get a library card to check out our materials with your $10-20/year donation membership, and that money, along with our larger donation supporters and more from our events, is how we pay our bills. Your support is really needed, so come by and check us out during our summer hours, 2-7:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Our events schedule is on this page -- note that every Sunday is Sunday Nite with Mike (Moore). The regular crowd who showed up for our airing of Michael Moore's "Awful Truth" series wanted to keep going, so we'll revisit some older episodes of TV Nation and a chronological showing of Michael's films--Roger and Me, Canadian Bacon, The Big One. Each of these starts at 8:15.

On Tuesdays at 8 pm we'll feature a topical presentation and discussion on a range of topics--a citizen's crime watch discussion with Stan Pollak, two excellent video documentaries followed by discussion on the news media in the 1990s, and then, on August 3, a presentation by Anthropologist Dr. John Moore on the false "science" that underlies racism and the very notion of different "races".

Wednesday night, July 28, our special guest is author Joe Haldeman, whose most recent work "Forever Peace" swept the major Science Fiction awards. He will give a brief talk at 8 p.m. entitled, ""Inventing the Last War," to be followed by discussion.

Every Thursday is the open poetry jam-a long-running forum for exposition of original and favorite works, getting underway at 9 pm. Various live music is scheduled on weekends too. So please make the Civic Media Center part of your world in Gainesville. Volunteer meetings are at 7 pm on Wednesdays. For more info call. 373-0010.
