The Conductor

Raymond Chobaz, Music Director and Conductor

"A most musical and sensitive conductor."

These were the words from a reviewer of a recent series of guest appearances in the Czech Republic by the
Gainesville Symphony Orchestra's Music Director and Conductor. As recipient of the 1993 International Symphonic Workshop Internship Program Award, Raymond Chobaz was appointed Conductor-in-Residence of the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Zlin) for the 1994-95 season. In this position, he was charged with preparing the Martinu Philharmonic for its first, highly acclaimed North American Tour and Carnegie Hall appearances. The quality was praised by The New York Times as a "unified, warm sound." Raymond also assisted John Rutter in preparing the Martinu Philharmonic for Haydn and Mozart Masses and Rutter's own Requiem and Magnificat.

While in the Czech Republic on grants from the University of Florida and the International Research and Exchanges Board, Maestro Chobaz had the opportunity to conduct many professional orchestras such as the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra (Marianske Lazne), the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic, the Silesian Opera Orchestra and Chorus (Opava), the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra (Ostrava), and the Kromeriz Chamber Orchestra. During this highly successful season reviewers described him as "an outstanding artist," as "profound," and as "a conductor with soul." His performances of Beethoven's Ninth were praised as "phenomenal" and "magnificent", and Verdi's Il Trovatore as "powerful" and "superb."

At the 1995 International Beethoven Workshop Raymond Chobaz was awarded First Prize and subsequently offered many guest conducting opportunities, including recording contracts with Americus Records and Vienna Modern Masters. Most recently, he has been appointed Music Director and Conductor of the prestigious Marienbad International Music Festival in the Czech Republic, an office he will take up in 1997. Now in his fourteenth season with the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra, he is also conductor of the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra.
