Free Radio Gainesville Lives #9

(As the Beatles once said . . .), it's getting better all the time . . .(our sound, that is)

94.7 FM

First, I must take a moment to graciously thank all people that came out to our benefit last week. We did very well and pulled in a total of $445! I also must (again) thank everyone who donated their energy to the show, including the musicians in Squeaky, the Crustaceans, Cloud Nine, and Amanda Garrigues. Thanks also to Kristen Wanner for making it sound awesome and last, but absolutely not least, Bill Bryson for donating the door to us.

We, immediately, ran out the next day and bought a mixer we had our eyes on. Thanks to Sound Ideas for a sweet deal. The next evening we had eliminated many of the annoying problems that our old mixer presented. We also got a new pair of spiffy headphones, so we can better hear what we're sending out. While not pretending to be professional, we strive to make ourselves sound as good as possible. The last thing we want is for people to turn us off b/c our levels aren't matching well or we have lots of dead air.

Cup O' Joe Seeks YOUR Input

Another fab show from FRG's own Que on Cup o' Joe this Monday. We hope everyone got to turn in to yesterdays show which covered the topic of LUST. This next Monday Que will explore POWER. What is POWER? Who has POWER? How do you get POWER?

Please provide input to this topic by emailing your thoughts to frg@afn.org. We'll read your input on the next week's show (Monday, April 6th). Also if you can suggest music that deals with POWER, please send suggestions to the same email address. Thanks for getting involved!

BTW, we are always looking for new shows to add to our schedule at FRG and we welcome any suggestions from the community. It is important to us to reflect the diversity in the community (of which there is a LOT!), so if you have show ideas and people to do them, please contact us at FRG.

Mutiniering with Radio Mutiny, West Philly Pirate Radio

Two members of Free Radio Gainesville have just docked back in Gainesville after setting sail to Philadelphia to take part in the first East Coast Micropowered Radio Conference from April 3-5th. Organized by the pirates at Radio Mutiny in West Philadelphia, the conference featured some interesting panels, workshops and other fun stuff that kept us moving all weekend.

Included was a Friday evening panel which included the chief enforcement officer of the FCC, Richard Lee. This was the first face-to-face meeting of an FCC agent with a group of micropowered broadcasters and it wasn't terribly interesting. This from Pete triDish of Radio Mutiny, ". . . It went really well. No big surprises, except I thought that he wouuld be a tougher adversary with slicker answers. Mostly what he said made very little sense. He said that the fcc is having a stepped up campaign to enforce all of their rules, including radio piracy. He said that other parts of the agency are seriously considering a low power fm, and they want comments. He trotted out the old crap about airplanes, and was confronted by a pilot who said that theclaim weas nonsense. He also admitted that when pirates cause interference, it is because of defective transmitters- he stopped just short of admitting that a properly functioning pirate transmitter posed no threat. He finished up by saying that he hoped that one day, we would all be legal, low-powered fm stations!"

Members of FRG ran a workshop on station structure and organization which included a 15-minute video on our organizational process. The workshop was well attended and appreciated.

Some workshops are going to appear soon in their entirety in mp3 format on the WWW. Check out the Radio4All Site at "radio4all.web.net" to check out that and other programming run by micropowered stations around the country and world.
