REMINDER: Band Drop-Off Box at Hyde 'n Zeke's

We have new way to get music in to our hot little hands. If you are in a band or have music that you want to donate to the station, there is a "Free Radio Gainesville Drop-Off Box" located at Hyde & Zeke's Records in the UF Plaza across from the University of Florida campus (the same plaza as University Copy Center and the Birkenstock Store).

We thought that this would be a logical way for bands to give us copies of their music. If you are in a band and you sell music to Hyde & Zeke's, why not drop a copy of your merch in the "Drop-Off Box"? This way you don't have to go through the motions of stuffing/sealing an envelope, getting postage on it and bringing it down to the post office. Just go by Hyde & Zeke's Records! And also, if you buy local music, I prefer to get it there at Hyde & Zeke's and so should you - Hyde & Zeke's are staunch supporters of local music and they are a small, independent record store that needs your support! As they say on the radio: Hyde & Zeke's - real people in a plastic business.

Film: Waco - The Rules of Engagement

Ever since CMC volunteers learned of this film a few years back, they have been trying to get it shown here in Gainesville and finally, it's time.

Waco, the Rules of Engagement is the first full length work to present the complete picture of the tragic events outside of Waco, Texas that resulted in the killing of four federal agents and the gassing and fiery deaths of 76 men, women and children of the Branch Davidian religious sect.

"One of the most disturbing films you'll ever see, this low-key documentary methodically and convincingly makes the case that the government - not David Koresh -- caused the fatal fire at the Branch Davidian compound in April 1993. A powerful indictment, this long, gripping film may be necessary viewing for any person in a free society." - LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle.

Waco, The Rules of Engagement will be shown on Monday June 1st, the first time the people in North Florida will get a chance to see this acclaimed documentary.

It will be shown at the Hippodrome Cinema on that one night only at 6:30pm and 9pm. A benefit for the Gainesville Iguana and the Civic Media Center, a reading-room and library of the non-corporate press. Admission will be a sliding scale, $3-5 with the doors opening at 6pm.

Support the Gainesville Iguana and the CMC and see the film the Washington Post called "a troubling, informative voice in the spin-controlled darkness."

The documentary raises many questions about the hypocrisy of the federal government. Questions like, how can a warrant to inspect some firearms result in the death of 85 men, women and children? And, how can we bomb Saddam Hussein in Iraq for harboring banned chemical weapons that the FBI used against women and children in Waco, Texas?

Health Care for People, Not for Profit - a message from Gainesville Women's Liberation, Gainesville Area National Organization for Women (NOW) and UF/SFCC Campus NOW

Join us for a community celebration of the work and mission of the Gainesville Women's Health Center.

From 1974 until the day it closed last fall, the Gainesville Women's Health Center fought for women's rights in health care and showed what giving people a say in their health care really means. Help us recognize the work of the Gainesville Women's Health Center, and talk about how we can make what the clinic stood for, "Health care for people, not for profit," a reality for everyone.

This event will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 7:30pm at the United Church of Gainesville's Fellowship Hall at 1624 NW 5th Ave.

We are requesting a $4 minimum donation. Refreshments will be provided. For more info, call 378-5655 or 377-9935. Childcare provided. Please call in advance if you want childcare.
