The History of the 1998-1999 Governor’s Project:
The Florida District of Key Club International and

The Florida Network of Youth and Family Services
A Partnership of Youth Helping Youth To
Improve the State of Our Children

1995 Karen R. Crapo, Executive Director of Corner Drug Store, Inc., in Gainesville, presents a workshop at District Convention about the Future of Florida's Children.
1996 Betty Stuart, from the FNYFS and Gail Fitzsimmons-Welker of Corner Drug Store, Inc. identify the Florida District of Key Club International as the youth leadership organization to assist the FNYFS in its campaign to increase awareness of FNYFS agencies, programs, and activities.

Betty Stuart and Tracey Bozman are invited by Governor Tricia Ruf to attend the Florida District Winter Board meeting to brainstorm Florida District participation within FNYFS programs and activities.

The 1996-1997 District Board endorses a three-tiered partnership with the FNYFS. The goals of this innovative partnership included:

  • to participate in the FNYFS campaign to increase awareness of the 1-800-RUNAWAY Hotline;
  • to raise funds to help maintain the RUNAWAY Hotline; and
  • to volunteer with FNYFS agencies and shelters in hands on service.
1997 1997-1998 Governor Glen DeLaney is sponsored by Corner Drug Store, Inc. as a Youth member of the Board of Directors of the FNYFS.

The FNYFS places the Key Club logo on all posters developed for the campaign to raise awareness of the RUNAWAY Hotline, using "Youth Helping Youth" as the motto.

Florida Key Clubs distribute posters to middle and high schools.

Fifty-two Key Clubs participate in the partnership in the first year; more than the total number of clubs which participated in the IDD program during its first year.

Florida Key Club members raise over $15,000 for the maintenance of the 1.800.RUNAWAY Hotline, exceeding the District Board's goal of $10,000.

Governor Glenn DeLaney participates in a press conference in Tallahassee with Governor Lawton Chiles, Secretary of Juvenile Justice Calvin Ross, FNYFS Board President Carl Weinreich, and other Youth Board Members.

1998 The Florida District of Key Club International is featured in the Annual Report of the FNYFS and clubs contributing to the maintenance of the 1.800.RUNAWAY Hotline are listed in the report.

The Florida District of Key Club International is chosen by the FNYFS as its 1998 Volunteer of the Year.
