FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY is a public interest, advocacy organization. We encourage informed and active participation by citizens in their local government. We are organized as a Florida corporation. We are organized in the public interest of the people and the land in Alachua County for educational, research, and advocacy purposes. We discovered that many other citizens like us were "getting involved" in issues that effect everyone locally. We realized that if we join together and share our experience and knowledge, we can reach our goal for a government that is responsive and responsible to citizens and to the public interest.
FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY champions local issues of health and safety, the environment and the economy of our county. We support the protection of our community from pollution. We support the conservation and wise use of local natural resources. We support the efficient use of tax dollars and other public monies. We support well planned and properly managed land use.
FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY monitors local governments to ensure that elected and appointed officials and employees are responsive to the public interest, and perform their service in an ethical and responsible manner.
FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY provides information, training and other assistance to citizens, neighborhoods, and other public interests. When working on an issue, we obtain relevant public documents and thoroughly study them. We also do additional research. We present oral and written comments, questions and concerns at public meetings. We lobby with local government to explain the significance of our information. We also work with regional, state and national agencies as needed. We help inform citizens with our presentations at public meetings, with our letters to local editors and with on-going personal interactions.
FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY publishes F.A.C.T., a monthly journal of the public interest. Publication began April, 1989. F.A.C.T. welcomes your contributions of investigative journalism, technical reporting, analysis, reviews, features, photos, cartoons and other graphics. F.A.C.T. economically promotes local businesses that support its publication and support the principles that guide FRIENDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY.
