CENSORED: BUYING/SELLING PERMITS TO POLLUTE

The 1995 Project Censored Yearbook is out and guess which issues dominate the list of the top 25 stories ignored or under-reported by the mainstream media in 1994?

Answer: Environment and Health, matters of prime importance to human life, health & safety. No. 23 on the list, Buying and Selling Permits to Pollute, is of special interest in Alachua County.

Other environmental concerns ignored or under-reported by the mainstream press were:

  • #4--Poisoning Ourselves with Toxic Incineration.
  • #5--Clinton's Retreat on Ozone Crisis.
  • #7--Wasting 60 Billion Lbs. of Fish Annually.
  • #12--Oil Spill Covered Up by Unocal.
  • #20--Legalizing Carcinogens in Our Food.

And what leads the Associated Press (AP) list of most reported stories for 1994?

Answer: No. 1 is the O.J. Simpson case. Other sensationalist stories concerned Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding, the Baseball Strike, and the N.C. Mother & Drowned Sons.

Second place on the AP list goes to the November Elections. (Media mainstreamers are still reporting this as a "mandate from the American people" although only one-third of the eligible voters made it to the polls.) In contrast, heading the Censored list was the failure of federal OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) to inform nearly 170,000 American workers that they faced health risks from on-job exposure to hazardous materials.

This is why the Alternative Press exists.
