The Organization of the association
Dr. Yan Won 1994 US President Award
Financial Report for 1994-95 Fiscal Year
The First Member Survey
Membership Renewal/Application Form
First of all, I would like to wish all of you have a happy holiday season and a joyful and successful new year.
Thanks for your support and trust, I have the opportunity to serving as the president of the association for the coming year. The past two years have been the great ones for our young association to build a good foundation. Now the challenges facing us are how to strengthen the association and how to serve our members better.
I believe that team work is critical for the association to grow more stable and mature. By now, the new Board of Directors (BOD) has been formed and several executive committees have been established, which are presented in this issue of the newsletter. I gratefully appreciate the commitment of those members to serve for the association in the different responsibilities. These committees are set up for more effective work on the public relations, academic development, business development, information exchanging and fundraising, and for the association to provide more services for the members. I hope we will keep the newly established tradition of the team work in the future.
This month, BOD meeting has invited Regional Coordinators and Committee Co-Chairs, and are discussing the Bylaws amendment to consolidate the fundamental issues, the establishment of annual awards to recognize and encourage members' contribution, and other issues to improve CPGIS influence in different regions. Meanwhile we have seen the great progresses in preparation for next annual conference, Geoinformatics '95 - Hong Kong, and for 1995 Beijing Urban GIS Workshop. We are looking forward to meeting you in these activities.
To solicit your opinions, we are currently conducting a member survey through CPGIS-L and the newsletter. You can find
the Member Survey
Questionnaire in this issue of the newsletter. You are encouraged to fill the questionnaire and mail it back with your
membership update to Mr. Xiaoming Zheng, our first Secretary General. We have received a number of responses since it
was posted in CPGIS-L. I hope each of you will take a moment to complete the survey. Your support and cooperation are
really appreciated.
While we are looking forward to the new year, it is time for us to renew the membership. You will find the Membership Renewal Form in this issue. As a new benefit of the association, we will provide renewed members with free subscription to leading GIS magazine and the CPGIS journal: Geographic Information Sciences. Members in United States and Canada will receive free subscription to GIS World, while members in Asia and Australia, including New Zealand, will receive free subscription to new magazine, GIS Asia/Pacific. At this moment, I am still working to find out the possibility for members in Europe to get free subscription to GIS Europe. The Journal of Geographic Information Sciences is scheduled to publish its first issue before the annual conference. Please renew your membership for 1995 as soon as possible, in order to get the January issue of these magazines. Your support will make the association more successful. Thank you very much.
Happy New Year!

Dr. Xiao-Hai Yan, a professor of applied ocean science at the University of Delaware's Graduate College of Marine Studies, has received the prestigious 1994 Presidential Faculty Fellow Award. Each year, only 30 faculty members from universities in the United States are selected by the White House to recognize early in their academic careers the scholarship and leadership in science and engineering. Dr. Yan, a native of Shanghai, China, is the sole representative of the geosciences among this year's recipients. He has contributed significantly through teaching and research to the advancement of remote sensing and its application to ocean sciences.
CPGIS's major income and expenditure was during the CPGIS '94 conference at Calgary. Due to conflicts with other meetings, CPGIS '94 at Calgary has not been able to attract enough participants especially demonstrators. Hopefully members within CPGIS will help encourage the companies that they work with to participate our future events. The following is a brief report. All details, according to the CPGIS Bylaws, can be examined by any CPGIS member during our CPGIS Annual Meeting in Hong Kong. Please notify Xiaoming Zheng four weeks ahead of time if the details are desired to be seen.
The total balance in US dollar on October 31, 1993 was $3520.27. The total balance in US dollar on October 31, 1994 was $3211.84 (Excluding money at RCs' hands such as Hong Kong, Japan, China, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands and Belgium where they spent partly for newsletter distribution and local activities).
The total balance in our Canadian dollar account on October 31, 1994 was $80.96. This was created for CPGIS '94 at Calgary.
Hui Lin, P. Gong, A. Zhang and X. Zheng have signing authorities to CPGIS accounts at Calgary requiring a minimum of two signatures. X. Zheng and P. Gong has signing authorities to the CPGIS account at Berkeley with a requirement of both signatures appearing on a CPGIS check.
Major income during the year was from CPGIS '94:
$2775 (Canadian Dollars, CND)
$280 (US Dollars, USD)
Dr. Wang Jianguo's donation of $300 for HKIES
Major expenditure during the year was for the CPGIS '94:
$843.75 CND for proceedings preparation
$1384.15 CND for conference site rental
$1332.67 CND for phone, fax, photocopying, conference preparation, transportation, and food
$700.00 USD for travel awards
$300 to Dr. Hui Lin for the establishment of HKIES
Total income except membership fees: $2775.00 CND + $580 USD
Total expenditure: $3560.83 CND + $1000 USD
Most newsletter distribution costs (to each member in USA, Canada, and to every regional coordinator outside USA and Canada) have been donated in kind. Therefore, our total deficit during 1993-94 fiscal year is less than $250 USD.
An agreement on service has been signed between CPGIS and R. B. Wright Associate, Inc. in mid November that will bring CPGIS $5400 USD. Taking off the service expenditure by members involved in this service a net income for CPGIS is a minimum of $1200.
With our two major activities planned for 1995, Geoinformatics '95 - Hong Kong and Beijing Urban GIS Workshop (a poster on which designed by Dr. Zhuang Xin and distributed with the last CPGIS Newsletter), let us work hard to raise the total balance so that more activities can be supported by CPGIS.
CPGIS, which was established on August 15, 1992, now has over 300 members, and is still growing. For better serving our members and for the stable and healthy development of our association, the 1994-95 President's Office would like to conduct a survey to get feedback from members. It is your opportunity to give your opinions and suggestions to the association. We will summarize the survey and make feasible plans based on the feedback for the further development of the CPGIS.
Special thanks to Ms. Li Yuanjun who designed the survey questionaire, Ms. Xiao Yanni and Dr. Guan Weihe for their valuable inputs to the survey, and Dr. Tang Qin who will help us to summarize the survey.
Meanwhile, we would like to take this chance to update your membership information. Please fill out the following questionnaire sheet and membership update part. Please mail the filled questionnaire to the following address by Jan. 15, 1995:
Mr. Xiaoming Zheng
Department of ESPM
145 Mulford Hall

You can also send the survey back through e-mail. If you need a digital copy, please send a message to survey@umgis.merrick.miami.edu. Your time and cooperation are highly appreciated!
Happy Holidays!
Yuemin Ding
