A website for Recreation I built with Rob Baker, the real Webmaster!

Greetings!

I will do ANYTHING to avoid Laundry and Dishes. They never end.

Of course, the need to update these pages never ends either, but these at least prove to be more challenging--especially when my 9-year-old daughter helps out. You'll note the variety of backgrounds and colors we used!

Let me tell you who I am, what I believe in, and where I live. I live in Alachua County, Florida, home of the University of Florida, the Gators, and amazingly sensitive land. It's way too hot here. I can take off only so many layers of clothing. I'm convinced there are body types that are designed for cold weather, and mine is one. However, I'm going to live here a long time, and they tell me I'll adjust. Seems to me the only real cure is to live in a swimming pool, and we don't have nearly enough to go around!

The values of the community are problematic for me. I grew up in Iowa, where even Republicans voted for schools. I believe that, if we give kids every chance to excel, we'll get productive citizens as adults. I believe we must give kids the very best education we can, and follow that with PROPER after-school and recreational programming. Proper recreational programming gives teens leadership skills, opportunities to work with younger children, build new ideas and programs, and helps them know they're a valuable part of the community. Further, they can't get into too much trouble if they're supervised.

If we do our jobs right, almost every kid will have many job options, and won't have to take minimum wage jobs. They'll contribute positively to the economic, social, and living fabric of our community.

Minimum wage jobs have a place in our society: for students working towards degrees, for parents who's main focus is children, but who want some stimulation outside the family, for children when they first enter the work force. However, too many people are forced into low-paying jobs for lack of better job skills. Why? What happened along the way for these people? How do we break the circle as their children aspire to the same jobs as their parents? And how do we help parents and kids improve their lots in life now?

These are the community issues that disturb me. So, how do I change the community?

I study. I talk, and I write.
