Physical Plant has announced plans to:
- Move 80% of Building Services staff to the night shift
(11pm-7am)
- Increase their coverage area by 4,000 square feet per worker or 19%
Employees have told the administration that night shift will:
- Disrupt our child care, transportation, and second jobs*
- Put a strain on our marriages and families
- Jeopardize our health, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which recommends against permanent night shift
- Place women in empty buildings in the middle of the night
- Decrease, not increase, the amount and quality of work, due to chronic lack of satisfying sleep
- Based on UF’s previous night shift experiment, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in electrical and other costs
*UF custodians start at less than $12,800 annually, $2,000 less than custodians at other state agencies.
Administrators say that this is what YOU, their customers, want—for custodial services to be provided "transparently."
